Many people say that this never happens, we're currently touring Norway

Just 5 minutes into the mornings drive and, along with other vehicles, wagons and cars, we're stopped for a vehicle check.

Always a heart stopping moment 😱

They had a good walk round check, tyres etc then weighed us, we came in at 3680kg and the GVW is 3700kg. We also have 100lt of water on board and a nearly full tank of diesel.

Their vehicle centre also had a brake tester..

Where did they take the GVW from - V5c or lading plate?

I’m definitely one of those that said it never happens, travelled a number of times into Scandinavia and just because it never happened to me assumed it didn’t to others, so thanks for posting, won’t be quite so blasé going forward.

Makes you wonder how many folks with bikes etc are way over? I’ve got a new Adria Twin 640. We’ve just about got it set up how we want it so checked it at our local weigh-bridge with all the usual touring paraphernalia on board plus two adults - nothing unusual or excessive loaded and about 50% water and fuel. Came in at 3460kg so only just legal and probably not so with full tanks and a few boxes of booze! My previous 6m van was about 3200kg with the same load, so moving from 6m to 6.4m has reduced my payload significantly, something I hadn’t thought too much about. Now I’m on a weight saving crusade!

Makes you wonder how many folks with bikes etc are way over? I’ve got a new Adria Twin 640. We’ve just about got it set up how we want it so checked it at our local weigh-bridge with all the usual touring paraphernalia on board plus two adults - nothing unusual or excessive loaded and about 50% water and fuel. Came in at 3460kg so only just legal and probably not so with full tanks and a few boxes of booze! My previous 6m van was about 3200kg with the same load, so moving from 6m to 6.4m has reduced my payload significantly, something I hadn’t thought too much about. Now I’m on a weight saving crusade!
Loads....(especially here in France)
Sticking to the UK, it ought to be a condition of sale from dealers that they come with a weighbridge print out specifying precisely what was on the vehicle at the time of weighing. After that, it is down to individuals to be sensible about it.
 
Did they check for alcohol or just weight…..asking for a friend 😊

A friend of my wife's arrived in Bergen (a while ago there there was such a ferry crossing) to be pulled over on the dockside to discover their tyres (ordinary saloon car) did not comply. They were not arrowed to move another inch until all five had been changed there and then. We will be visiting them in the next couple of months so the subject of tyres has raised it's ugly head - I'm approaching the need to change my tyres in the next few weeks so still in the process of choosing a new set at the moment. Will be making a post on this later. Interesting comment on going through weight-watchers though, we will be carrying the contents of my sons flat in the journey !!!

Interesting... The Augusta doesn't have a weight on the V5 but the Tag Plate says 4,500kg 6,250kg GTW

So I wonder what they'd do if I came in at 4,000Kg use the Tag Plate weight or say it's gotta be under 3,500kg ?

Living in Cornwall, St Austell, we are quite close to a public weighbridge at Henry Orchards scrap merchants in Trethurgy (very close to the Eden Project) last time I did it it £5 to get your car/van/whatever. No booking required, just turn up. To me that's pretty good value and a pretty good starting point.

Whatever the TAG plate shows, on mine I have three tag plates now though ....

In the VW world I'd say LOADS of people travel overweight. You only need to see a T6.1 arrive at a weekend festival with a family of three or four, dog, bikes on the back, top box - open side door and the van is bulging with awning, crates, beer etc. I find it hard to believe that those aren't on or over their weight limit.

Takes me back to the 1980s when I had a ford escort estate. Holidays meant a full to the roof boot, bikes on the roofrack. It didnt look too low at the back so I wasnt too worried. My brother in law used to arrive with his car bonnet pointing to the moon, he never got done for it though. Ive seen videos of cars pulled over when the police notice too many people on board but do many cars get pulled over for weight checking?

I suggest choosing proper winter tyres, with the mountain and snowflake symbol. and run on them all year. My logic for doing so was that it saves having two sets of tyres, saves having to change the tyres on the wheels, or having 2 sets of wheels. Neither set in MH use would wear out before needing changing for age, nor will one set of winter tyres if one does say 5,000 miles a year and changes at 6 years.

Winter tyres will do slightly less mpg but the cost is easily saved by not paying for two changes per year and not replacing two sets when only at half life.. There is a slight increase in stopping distance on winter tyres in summer, but marginal.

I’m a big fan of winter tyres and know a bunch of folks on here run winter tyres all year round. My only concern with this approach is that if you were involved in an accident in the summer and the insurance company spotted that you were using winter (not all season) tyres, could this give them an opportunity to try to wriggle out of paying up on the grounds that you were using unsuitable tyres….?
 
Weighed our new van on the way to the ferry on our first trip, deliberately left a load of stuff at home. We were only 300kg over.
Uprating to 4000kg, just waiting for the new V5 to arrive.
I read 30kg over...then read again 300kg....what on earth were you exporting...I imagine returning with booze putting motorhomes overweight...but on the outward journey? 🤔🚴🏿🇪🇦

Didn't comply in what manner? They were travelling in winter on summer tyres? Tyre tread depth too low?
