I think 3mm comes from best advise -summer and 4mm comes from winter driving/winter tyres.
I've got some 4 season on my VW T6 Vel, they came with about 9mm tread depth, I'll change at 3mm. Never got close to wearing a set of MH tyres out regarding tread depth, guess i should get out more
. I think a HGV's running at 150psi displaces water and mobilise more friction (with a load on) than a MH, but I certainly travel faster than a HGV.....
