Hi can anybody please shed some light on my conundrum. I would like to fit a towbar to my moho to pull a small trailer but i am having a couple of difficulties, the first being the two weight plates under the bonnet. the first reads,
FIAT.
3300KG
5800KG
1-1750KG
2-1900KG
The second is as follows. MONCAYO. SA.
3500KG
4750KG
1-1750KG
2-1900KG.
I know that numbers 1 and 2 in both instances refer to front and rear axle weights but what is the max weight limit of the vehicle. I have class C1E on my licence as i used to drive HGV's so that isn't an issue. I just want to be driving legally. The second issue is how can i find out which kind of chassis extensions i have in order to get the correct towbar fitted, i know it isn't an ALKO chassis but it has been suggested that the extensions could be ALKO. If any member can furnish me with any info it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Ste.

The 2nd plate puts the GVW at 3500kg the gross train wt 4750. The reduction from the fiat value makes me suspect there is a large rear overhang or chassis extension fitted. As a simple rule of thumb alko would be galvanised fiat painted white, i am no expert. For advice on a towbar try pws eng in poole or

Armitages did my towbar, as they ignored the chassis extension and went all the way back to original chassis, does depend on age of van, as newer needs a certified bracket. My towing capacity was reduced from 2000kg to 1250kg when the second plate was added by rollerteam with van weight going from 3500 to 3850. From your second plate your towing capacity should be 1250kg.

That is true ONLY IF the van is actually loaded to the GVW.

For every Kg that the van is below the GVW that is an extra Kg that can be towed.

I don’t think this is unusual. The Fiat plate goes on when it leaves their factory. It is then superseded by the converters plate when they have finished their modifications, which can involve chassis, suspension and wheel changes.

Fair comment Ian, but for me armatages have plated the towbar @ 1250 so I would be reluctant to go much over it for insurance reasons.
