Or is it a Shag….? Did you see its eye colour…..?

It’s near water so it’s obviously a Kingfisher

I think it might be a cormorant, the photo taken in north Spain.

On a boat trip down the Thames many years ago my mum heard someone watching the birds say “I can never tell the difference between a cormorant and a shag”. She said “no wonder his wife looks so miserable “.

Debs yes I think you are right. Never heard of that before.
Obviously the randy little devil is hopeful.
Nigel Crompton AndyPK at 75 I can just about remember what a shag is like.
Very, very dark green, beautiful in the sun, and with green eyes like buttons ... same profile as the slightly larger cormorant.

The Common Cormorant or Shag

by Christopher Isherwood
The Common Cormorant or shag
Lays eggs inside a paper bag.
The reason you will see no doubt
It is to keep the lightning out.
But what these unobservant birds
Have never noticed is that herds
Of wandering bears may come with buns
And steal the bags to hold the crumbs.
