I have a TV/DVD player from our last van that requires 12V 5A. Using the rear cig lighter socket, it starts, but quickly (in 5secs) decides there is not enough power and shuts down (Leisure battery registers 14V and we have a solar panel for top up). The socket says it is limited to 6Amp. The TV works properly when we’re hooked up and I use the mains adapter. The aerial (when there’s a signal) has delivered DVB channels. The TV used to run happily on 12V power in the old van ( about 6 years ago).

I’ve tried using the front cig lighter sockets (registering 14V) even running the engine - same problem.

I’d be obliged for suggestions/experience as to what I should check next.
Do I give up and buy a new TV/DVD (or read a book when off-grid)?

Have you checked the bayonet fitting that you plug into the cig socket. I had a similar issue ,TV kept shutting off but standby light still on.though it was the TV breaking down but when I plugged a different lead in it was ok.I stripped down the bayonet plug and found that the central positive wire that sits under the spring loaded fuse had broken off. Fine when it was cold as it was in electrical contact as it warmed up it lost contact
Resoldered it and no further issues. (y)

Ah! Thanks jimbohorlicks - really helpful comment. Will look for another connector and try again - much cheaper than a new TV!
