My van is fitted with a truma hot water boiler which can be run on either gas or electric. We are away for the weekend and everytime I try to run it on gas you can hear the solonoid lifting but not the ignition clicking and after about 10 seconds the red light comes on and it shuts down.
I have plenty of gas
The batteries are fully charged
Im off grid so can’t use electric.
I have removed the outside cover 😉
Has anyone had a similar experience please, and if so what was it?
Im thinking ignition problems and wondered if this is a part that’s easy to get at and replace?
Hoping it’s not a PCB problem because I think they are really expensive.
Any suggestions would be appreciated as I am in desperate need of a shower, according to my wife.

With the bottom cover removed a d stood near it can you hear the ignition clicking a then it light, perhaps then shut down.

Mine was like that, if it lightning and then shutting down then its likely the gas valve is OK.
But then could be the thermo couple, the gas shut off block, or the dreaded pcb.

Also could be the regulator gummed up, they often let enough gas through for the hob & fridge to work but can't supply the boilers high demand.

Thanks for all the replies.Just been outside and it’s definitely trying to light so it probably is a gas problem. All other gas appliances are working fine, even when they are all turned on at the same time.Possibly the gas valve not lifting?

If it's a Truma regulator more likely its that.

There is a small viewing panel held normally by a single screw to enable you to see if the flame, in there you will see the thermo couple also.
Is the flame normal colour and size, if its the regulator it may well be a small flame or very yellow in colour.

It’s on an underslung tank.I’ve replaced it once already about 2 years ago.Do the new ones come with a filter now?

I’d second gas valve not providing enough gas for the boiler.

Do you have a bbq point? Could you arrange a cylinder and regulator to feed in via bbq point, would prove if gas supply/pressure is the issue.

Or with plastic tube make a manometer and check gas pressure at bbq point or elsewhere.

On most Truma heater with the red light fault indicator, if the red light is flashing that indicates low battery, fixed red light indicates gas fault. Which model Truma do you have? If you have the secure motion regulator for having heating on whilst traveling the are well known for gumming up they can let enough gas through for the fridge and gas hob, but not enough for the heater. One way to check the regulator is to light all the hob burners, then oven if you have one.then try to light your heater and watch what happens to the flame on the burners. If it stays constant it may be the heaters gas valve not opening.
also the Truma C6002 series the flame completes the circuit for the safety cut off if it cant see the flame it will turn off. It is slightly different from a normal thermocoupl.

When the regulator gums up the pressure can remain the same but the flow rate is reduced. The pressure only drops with the heavy demand of the boiler.

I agree,
So checking pressure while boiler is trying to light will show up as low pressure if flow rate is reduced at that time.

Not sure on the layout of you motorhome but our Savannah has the Truma under one of the single beds. There are two shut-off valves under there, one for the Truma and one for the external gas outlet.

After using the barbie ask the other half to turn off the gas outlet valve again. About an hour or two later she complained the hot water wasn't hot! What had I done? The red light was on the heating controls!

Wanna guess which valve she had turned off?

Couldn't be something as simple as the shut-off valve for the Truma has been turned off?

Mines an Apache.I’ve looked under the seat where the both the boiler and external bbq points are situated and can’t see any isolation valves under there. Thanks for help though 👍

I'm fairly certain there will be a shut-off valve for the Truma somewhere. Whether that's your problem or not though if you can't find it???

"Before operating the heater for the first time
ensure that the 12V system is turned ‘ON’ on the
control panel over the doorway, and that the gas
cylinder, and isolation valve are turned on."

The isolation valves are under the cooker in a small drop down locker. There are 6 all in a row and all are in the on position.

Have you bled your boiler? Open the kitchen sink tap until there is no air coming out and then do the same to the bathroom basin, also make sure that the boiler vent cover outside is off

Has truma been turned off in wrong sequence? It might need resetting. There are 2 resets on our Truma 1 electric on circuit board and 1 thermal to reset the information is in the Truma handbook

The boiler should self bleed, there is a special elbow valve at the top that allows air out but shuts when water pressure is present.

The OP has looked long and hard for the circuit board reset button but his board does not seem to have one. See earlier pictures of pcb, I can’t see one.

Suggest regulator or check the gas boiler flu is clear and properly connected.

Oops, I have been mixing up threads and replies, that bit was meant for elsewhere. Sorry Treefitter

just to confirm. If the main regulator is partially blocked, enough LPG can get through to work the fridge, hob, oven and gas fire without issues, but not enough to fire up the Truma water heater?Have I got that right?

That's exactly the same symptoms mine displayed a couple of years back, luckily we were coming back up through North Yorkshire and just diverted to Autogas 2000 and picked up one of their Cavagnna (spelling ?) regulators that cured the problem.
