Truma combi E water not heating up correctly

Hi Guys and ladies of course. We are on site in Burford and struggling to get the hot water to work properly on electric only? If it is put on both gas and electric...all seems fine. Put it on to summer mode and electric only and I can barely get 4 litres of hot water after being on all night!
I know its been asked before but ....Is it just possible that the element is failing me?
Sorry to come across vague but Kev is out of action at the moment what with the pills and medication .
Just need a little advice if you can?

I'm no technical wizz, but I believe the Truma combi E has 2 electric heating elements, rated at 900 watts each which can be switched independently (ie total 1,800 watts). It sounds to me as though perhaps one of the two elements has failed?

I expect someone with more expertise than me will be along soon with more advice...

Hope you can get it fixed.

Worth asking Truma themslves, there is a space on the web site to ask questions. Electricity is, we know, slower to heat the water than gas. Try heating up with gas and then switching to electric and see if it holds the temperature. There is also a map to home in on Truma trained engineers in your region.
 
Hi Carolyn, it maybe your slow blow 10 amp 240v glass fuse which is fitted below the 12v one on the boiler itself. It's easily replaceable once you know where to find it under the black plastic panel.

A guess.....

If you are setting the water temp to 40 as opposed to 60...

I do believe that once it reaches 40 (economy mode) ... it will allow the water to drop to something like 20 before “kicking in” again...

Which with a timing issue for using... may be the case....

E.g... set to 60... and it will maintain that temp...

Set to 40 and use immediately the temp gauge stops flashing... cos once it does.... it allows the water to cool significantly before “kicking in” again..

It “may” be something as simples as that (y)

Hi John. Thanks for the info..We have the Gauges set at 60 degrees and 2 bars ( I believe its the 2 kw setting?) for electric use only. Over night it gets hot but soon it is lost. Approx 4 litres of hot water only. If it is put on to gas and electric at its high settings on both...all seems fine? Not sure why it gets hot initially and then is lost? Will contact the dealer tomorrow and see if they can shed any light at all.
I suppose one element as someone has mentioned ..may be at fault?

A slow blow fuse allows a degree of shorting or power surge. It'll be damaged but not fully blown hence the lower power. It will blow fully if it's kept in use. I'd recommend just using the gas until you have the opportunity to switch the fuses, if that doesn't rectify the fault I'd then call a Truma engineer.

In most cases the fuses are there to stop major damage occurring, they are the first line of defence and is why they are easily sourced and replaced.

Here it is - getting access to it is not always easy. You can get at the 12v fuse at the top easy but the the 240v fuse is at the bottom of the control boards and I had to remove the boiler to get to it.

A slow-blow fuse is just that. It will allow for limited surges with no damage. If excess current is drawn for too long the fuse will blow as normal. If it ever partially fails (never seen that) it is faulty.

I’m sure I am stating the obvious here, but. Whilst you are running the hot tap, the hot water that remains in the boiler is getting topped up with cold water. So the temperature of the stored water will loose it’s heat very quickly, if the boiler can’t not reheat very quickly, and as has been said the electric elements are not quick or powerful. It doesn’t take much cold water to reduce 60 degree water to a tepid 30-40.

Just a thought. Anyone have any views on the above idea?

Agree with what you are saying...

But my money is also still on one of the two 900-watt elements having failed.

On ehu my hot water is on 24/7 at the low rate 900w and temp 60. This works fine for me, however 4L is a high proportion of a 10L tank so some cooling is not surprising.

It would certainly seem logical to think it might be the element that is always on ie half power, when heating water with electricity.

Don't think a fuse can partially blow it would have a higher resistance and then go quickly. Try it on full electric if its ok and the electric isn't metered forget it!
 
Spoke to dealers this morning and they seem to think it is an element that is at fault. Warranty is the key word here! It is covered thank goodness!
They are to replace when we get it home in July. Thanks ever so much guys for your help here. Kev is a little delicate at the moment so he cannot get to play technician unfortunately. He has said that if it cannot be sorted on this forum...it cannot be sorted anywhere! You have gone above and beyond again. Thanks and take care.

Glad to hear the dealer has said replacement will be done under warranty. The elements are relatively expensive (compared to say a standard immersion heater element) and the labour involved in fitting them can be significant, I understand. You'd imagine it would just be a case of unscrew the old one, and simply replace with new. But don't think it's quite so straightforward, as quite a lot of dismantling; and it also depends how accessible the boiler is too.

Good luck and trust you get it sorted OK, which I'm sure you will. And hope Kev will soon be recovered.

They have also said that if Truma cannot supply the parts in a fair time...it is up to them to supply a new unit in its entirety. If they cannot replace a new unit then the dealer have said that they will remove one from a truck and install it in ours. They will then claim back the entire costs plus fitting from Truma because they cannot supply the items that they are obliged to.
wu uuuuuuuh! Love it when a plan comes together! Really makes a change that a dealer goes above and beyond too!

The dealer have said "This is not good enough" ....they will take a complete unit out of a truck for us and replace it job lot! Now thats service for you!
They have also said that if Truma cannot supply the parts in a fair time...it is up to them to supply a new unit in its entirety. If they cannot replace a new unit then the dealer have said that they will remove one from a truck and install it in ours. They will then claim back the entire costs plus fitting from Truma because they cannot supply the items that they are obliged to.
wu uuuuuuuh! Love it when a plan comes together! Really makes a change that a dealer goes above and beyond too!
