Hi everyone goin to france. Early May... First trip bit nervous about driving... how do I avoid the toll roads.. any tips gratefully recieved

As above regards using a Sat Nav.
However, the toll roads in France are signed with the word Peage with the sign in blue similar to our motorways, not all autoroutes are toll roads.

Assuming you want to avoid the toll roads for genuine reasons and concerns about costs. Using Toll roads can work out cheaper or more efficient depending on where you're going and how long you have to get there. Some none toll roads are a bloody nightmare, with a roundabout every few miles and often less ( the French are trying to cut road deaths so have introduced lots of traffic calming and lots of speed cameras)

If you use viamichelin as your planner, it will provide you with costs of tolls and fuel used if you enter a few vehicle details.

We use a mixture of tolls and none tolls and have found that buying a toll tag is invaluable and stops heated discussions on where the ticket is or where is the credit card or cash ....and the passenger having to lean out of the window while the driver tries to get them close enough to the ticket machine to reach the ticket or make the payment.

If you have all the time in the world and it's not about cost, wear and tear over speed bumps in every village, then there is so much more to see by avoiding toll roads, which is why we do a mixture.

Plan your first stop and route to it carefully. Have it written down on old fashioned paper, as well as the coordinates in sat nav with “no tolls” set on it. When you are on the boat waiting to disembark, change country setting on your sat nav to France.
The first bit will be the most nerve wracking of course but once that is out of the way, and you have a night under your belt, it will all get easier and more relaxed.

I usually plan on a paper road map. Be aware that place names are duplicated in France in lots of departments so never just search for a place on sat nav and go ! Always check the route is where you want to go.

Don’t rule out toll roads, they can save a lot of annoying slow roundabouts, town speed humps and many changes of speed limits. If you do find yourself on one, just exit through a tollbooth with an image of credit cards above and it is no hassle just inserting card for payment. I assume you do not have a toll tag so just avoid the lanes with a t sign above.

I have a garmin camper sat-nav and as I dislike toll roads it has never put me on one yet in lots of countries…😎

Don't worry about it it's easy and Dieppe is a good start.
Very easy access to the port which completely avoids the town. Word of warning new link road to the south of the town that probably won't be on your satnag so it will get confused just use common sense.

You have time to get one by post. It would be worth it to take away any hassle. I have the Fulli one but have not yet used it because it is replacing my ATMB one which is due to battery expire after 6 years.
These tags have no subscriptions, you just attach a (fee free) card and it debits your account.

Great thank you

Seriously i find the most stressful part of going to France is getting out of the UK all the hassle of getting down to the tunnel or ferry but ok once I am there it's like a old pair of slippers just chill and go with the flow. If you wanna go miles fair enough if you wanna bumble around northern France then it's all good with the people I've met over the years on Aires campsites ect roll on my next visit.
