Few years now
We are currently away in Spain whilst our house conveyancing goes through. We were planning on heading back at the end of this month, though it now looks like we will have at least another 3 weeks to wait.

We have extended our current travel insurance with Nationwide which would take us to the end of the month. However we now need another three week cover which they wont extend as we are already away.

So we have two choices. Fly back to UK and start a new trip or buy an additional insurance policy which will provide cover after a trip has started.

We are looking at the second option as an easier solution. So does anyone have any recommendations of providers they may have used in a similar situation?
Thanks
Howard

I think you will have difficulty finding any insurer to insure you if you are away.
I don't know but just a guess, can you get insurance from a Spanish insurer

There are quite a few if you do a Google search, just looking for personal recommendations.

I think Carpmart has done it so hopefully Harvey will pick up on this. I might be wrong though.

As everything is done online how would they know where you are?

I’d start a new policy. I’d be surprised if it states you must be at your home address. Or assess the situation and see how lucky you feel :ROFLMAO:

Most do ,the ones I'd seen anyway but apparently I was wrong , just googled it as the op says and there are firms that actually advertise it, but dread to think how much it would cost.
But there's always the e111 or what it's called now to fall back on.

I have tried a few of the suppliers and had quotes between £170-£250 for an extra 21 days of cover. I guess there arent a lot of providers hence the costs. Will still work out cheaper to pay that and stay over here than head back & park up on a site in UK somewhere.

I’m glad we went for 365 days of cover. For less than your top quote

Is it possible to get a family member to do it for you ? Our daughter did ours when we got stuck in America due to covid.
Enjoy your travels.
Phil

Not really as we are already out of the country. Just found a company who will cover us for £110 for the three weeks we need, which is a bit more palatable.

We extended and nine month policy and we are now in the second year. Big Cat Insurance who are a specialist ‘gap year’ type insurer, but insure the middle aged contingent too. The two years insurance, with motorbike use over 125cc (a not inconsiderable add on) has cost around £800.

I’ve no idea how good they are from a claim perspective, but they have been very good and easy to deal with to date!

Virgin. £217 unlimited travel although I think without looking it’s 90 days return home and you can go again
Came in at £750 for us when I ran a dummy quote, you must be a lot younger than we are.

67 and 63 both with conditions.
You never know what they might charge.
I hope they don’t put it up that much in January

Ok we are a good few years younger. Was yours just EU cover or worldwide? We usually get worldwide.

Just reading this thread I can understand why single trip insurance or a new policy can't be taken out of you're not in the country but not why you can't renew an annual policy thats already ongoing is that really the case?

Yes, Nationwide ( UK insurance) have said once the trip starts it cant be extended. We did think 43 days cover would be enough for this trip.

Could you book a cheap flight from the U.K. to any airport close to you, download your ticket and boarding pass without actually boarding then your ferry home as your return date. If unfortunately you had to use insurance you’d have your boarding pass as proof of arrival date, I’m not sure if they actually get the flight register to see if you actually did fly.

Paying for insurance is a waste of money if it could be voided on a technicality.

Hadn’t thought about that but I wonder what they did before the B word when we didn’t get them stamped or did we my memory has gone. I know it’s inconvenient but if you could get a return with short stay in airport for lunch then back out, does seem a lot of hassle but might be only way round it.

For the sake and hassle of saving £70 not worth it to us.

You will struggle as too many try to buy insurance after they need it when away
You will both have to come back as they seem to have access to travel information.

Someone I know tried and the response was 2 people accounted for on ferry
