newbie, years of tent camping
We have a problem with the transmission on our Ducato 2.3 multijet.

About 40mins into a journey everything is fine and then we get grinding changing up from 3rd to 4th gear and the same when changing down from 5th to 4th gear and occasionally can't select 3rd from 4th gear.

Before all this happened, a few weeks ago coming back from Yorkshire, after about 2 hours on the motorway and moving on to A roads and to our overnight stop, the gear linkage went stiff and we had trouble getting gears. On our stop we lubricated the linkage with WD40 which helped to free it up, on getting home we lubricated all the linkage with high temperature grease and the linkage was then free. However I now have the problem as described above.

Anybody got any ideas what the problem may be.

Many thanks

It’s one option Imhad thought of. Do you know how much needs to go in, know how to drain, not sure how best to get back in as no obvious route.

@cheyanne sorry to hear of your gearbox gear selector problems.
Just so others more qualified that me can maybe offer some useful assistance, can you mention the year of the van & mileage, we know its 2.3 and a manual box, when was it serviced last and by who?
The more detail you can provide the better of getting some help that will steer you in the right direction to probable cause. Hopefully its just a linkage problem lubrication and maybe alignment, fingers crossed.
Good Luck
Les

Stiff linkage won't cause grinding, that's more of an internal lubrication/wear problem, it'll just make it harder to change gear
Regular commercial vehicle garage is your best option for a gearbox oil change.
Cheaper than a mo-ho dealer and most likely more knowledgeable.

It’s a 2007 Ducato

2007 mileage around 30,000, I do my own servicing

If it's the 244 shape van water used to get into gear box via the reverse light switch
Water used to gather in the casting on the top of the box and seep in
Refilling is done there by removing the switch and putting the required amount of oil

It’s a 250X 2007 reg 2.3 multijet

Had a similar problem on a 2007 x250 second gear synchromesh and gear selector worn possibly due to stiff linkage. (so I was told) I was shown the worn parts. About £1800 to repair!!

As above, common problem with ducatos pugs and Citrions , emulsified oil in gearbox, (water getting in)

Can be fixed by buying the Scuttle mod which takes the water behind the g/box, from any Pug dealer, about £30.

Thanks for the all comments, Water has been sitting on the casing so going to see if changing the oil will sort it, hopefully, if not I will take the gearbox out and either get a reconditioned box or I know a company that rebuilds and repairs gearboxes near where I live, depending which is the cheapest, will save on labour charges as can do it myself, already changed two gearboxes on my kids cars in the last year, getting to be a habit! as for scuttle mod have done that recently when I realised water was laying there when greasing up the linkage.
