Traditional or transverse trailer

Hi All

Am looking for peoples thoughts, experiences and recommendations on towing a bike on either a traditional, longitudinal or a transverse type trailer. This will be to take over the water to the mainland.

Putting in the garage is not an option. As I don’t have one. As it’s a rack on the back of the van.

I have a Motolug trailer. Traditional longitudinal one but it can be dismantled for storage. Great piece of kit.

Yep I’ve seen them and noted a few have them.
Just don’t look that sturdy though ??

Perfectly fine. Never a problem.
If I was buying again I would buy the 10 “ wheels but in many years of European and UK travel never had an issue with the 8” ones.

The axle beam and main chassis are very sturdy.

There’s a two year old one for sale on eBay. £618 at the moment with a BIN of £800 or so

They are expensive new.Would I buy another one new? Maybe not due to price but defo for convenience.
They can’t be loaded without the hitch being on the tow ball as they tip up to load. That has only caught me out a couple of times on sites if I can’t get to the towbar before moving the van.
 
I fancy one of the short trailers that uses two hitches to keep it straight and uses wheels which turn.

But never actually used one - but a short extension to the motorhome to carry two tonnes sounds useful.
 
Transverse are far to twitchy to reverse.....reversing just 3ft or 4ft you could easily jack-knife it doing damage to the back of the van.
The twin hitch type mentioned above will be good......if you trust castor wheels, I don't.
Longitudinal trailer, the longer the better, are easy to reverse as the movements are slow and large and takes a lot to jack-knife

Yep not too keen on twin hit hitch no the hydra lift /trail etc as they are emit easily detachable so possibly awkward on a pitch for one night.

Have a lot of experience reversing with caravans but not transverse trailers which I would expect to be more difficult.
 
We had a armatage transverse trailer for our scooter, towed to Spain a few times with no problems. Reversing is possible with the aid of a rear camera. Easy to store once on site .
