I thought it best to warn you.

Ever since we bought our MoHo ten years ago, we have used a SOG, fitted from the outset.

Frankly it has never done what is claimed. I am certain the fan is running the right way, the flame on a wax taper does draw into the cassette, just; I have minimised the length of the vent pipe to reduce friction, and have used all the bio additives to aid ‘digestion’ and I know the installation is correct. A major drawback has been the awful smell that anybody downwind of us has to endure when the fan is running.

Have I missed anything? I did read somewhere that the reason people don’t seem to think it reduces odour is that the breakdown action doesn’t have enough time to work in a MoHo cassette and that if we left it for a long time it would be fine. Not going to happen - two/three days max. (We don’t flush after peeing, we spray the bowl with water/bio liquid to minimise fresh water draw.)

The next question concerns the conventional system we have reverted to. All the SOG mods have been reversed, and I have added Elsan Blue Bags claimed by some to be excellent at odour management. Not in my experience.

Any thoughts on how I should manage this issue, or have I just got to stop striving for the unachievable?

I hope you haven't reversed the flow of the SOG fan ......😫

did you consider installing a new fan in the system to remove the smells as your old one might be worn/underperforming?

To help reduce the pain to others, we only open the hatch (and therefore operate the fan) when actually unloading .... though when I tested our SOG for levels of odours, by the time I had pulled my trousers up and ran outside, I couldn't smell a thing 😁😁

Maybe you’re just cursed with a sensitive nose. I’m somewhat serious about this: maybe those people who swear by SOG or say Elsa’s Blue smells like puppies just can’t smell in the same way you can.

Why do you, or others think SOG will stop smells??

You are just drawing a draft across a tank of shit, pee, and water. It isn’t magic. The smell needs to be filtered, or covered up by the smell of something else.

My nose is very sensitive but the only times we had a smell from our SOG loo was when the blade etc in the cassette needed cleaning!
We always flush and I keep a spray bottle of white vinegar & water mix to deter scale build up as it collects urine and that causes smell!
Replace the charcoal filter in the SOG, and maybe a stronger fan, ours gave up and Manic replaced it with a computer fan, it did seem to run faster.

Don’t have any smells with ours
Nor ours, and I do have a sensite nose for smells, so I wouldn't put up with it myself.

Chuns. If you are sure you fan is drawing out to the atmosphere, rather than pushing in, definitely check the charcoal filter as mentioned by eurajohn above. It is a very simplistic item, but so important for the filtering of odours to the atmosphere. No need to source the expensive Thetford ones, but instead you can source a large charcoal filter for cooker hoods, then cut and double where necessary, to fit the filter housing.

Also, when finished doing the business and leaving the bowl clean, when the blade is closed, spray or flush a small amount of water over the blade. This creates a water seal preventing odours coming up through from the cassette. If the water drains away in a short time, then that is a sure sign that the blade seal needs replacing. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy. ;)

Good luck,

Jock. :)

It would appear that the simplicity of how a SOG work is not understood by you.
Let me explain, the blade seals off the "tank of shit, pee, and water" so containing the smell within the cassette.
As the blade is opened, the fan starts up, drawing the pong out of the cassette to the outside of the van.
The fan continues to run while the blade is open so drawing off the smell while the number one's and or two's are deposited into the cassette, and when the blade is closed again sealing off the cassette contents, our fan continues to run for another minute or so to evacuate the worst of the smell of what has been deposited, and that's the reason why we that have SOG have no smell from the "tank of shit, pee, and water". We have had SOG's for over 15 years, we try and empty every morning and also dispose of our washing up water down the toilet - keeping our waste tank and cassette relatively clean.

I understand that, but the pong remains and is just past outside. Hence my comment about a filter. My standard cassette setup does the same operation of a running a fan, taking the smell out through a filter whilst blade is open.

Interesting observations, thanks all. My understanding of the SOG principle was that it created an environment which encourage microbes to digest the waste, turning it into something less offensive to humans; that was the thrust of my question, rather than whether the SOG was functioning correctly mechanically, which I know it was. Except it wasn't doing the job.

It is behind me now (though I can reverse the reversal), so I am on a quest to know the best chemical additive to use.

the best we use is 'none' ....... freely available in all areas.... or if youre struggling, i can put some of the 'clacton clean' in a container and sell you some ..... ;)

We have a SOG, Lidl basic bio laundry pod and spray the bowl with Zoflora antibacterial. No smell for anyone. Also no toilet paper in the cassette (makes emptying much easier). And home deep clean of the cassette and unit a couple of times a year!

I think the best SOG installations vent through the roof, rather than the side, and don't employ a filter.
