Today at the weighbridge .

Van is the 640sgx.
Full fuel tank, full water tank, hab air con, awning and some travelling gear loaded etc.
Only me in the van.

Front axle weight 1700kg.
Rear axle weight 1680kg.
Overall weight 3380kg.

Van is on the Maxi chassis plated at 4250kg therefore loads of payload available.

Ally.
Looks good, you may have a tonne of of payload left BUT….

it’s not only the total weight that matters, it’s the individual axel loads as well.

from your load plate what are the bottom two numbers? They are the front and rear axle limits.

Good news, wise choice going for the 4250 chassis. Just imagine the dilemma if you only had the 3500 chassis. Even uprating the 3500 would still be tight.

Yeah,

Front axle weight on plate is 2100kg
Rear axle weight on plate is 2400kg

Sure was, I have 10 years ( hopefully ) before the C1 renewal kicks in.
It would have been border line with 3500kg,

Why?, with full fuel and full water, some traveling gear, and the driver there is still plenty left at 3850.

Loads of room for a booze cruise then….. :whistle2:

Yeah but not if the van was plated at 3500kg.

Yes, but I quoted the post that said after uprating. A 3500, at 3850 still leaves plenty.

Or have I missed something?

Not sure.

The van is plated at 4250kg therefore I should not have any problems with payload.

No you have not missed anything. It still would not be enough margin for me. Plus the upgraded brakes is a bonus with the 4250 chassis and a cheaper RFL!

This thread raises the payload question for other popular 6.4m PVCs on the light chassis. If plated at 3500 kg it may be very tight for anyone without a C1 licence to benefit from upgrading to 3850 kg.

How much extra weight does the Ducato 6.4m body (and extra interior conversion) add compared to the 6m body? Correct me if I am wrong, but I'm guessing about 200kg. Maybe more.

If you do not have C1 you may have no choice , what matters if it’s tight provided you don’t go over the 3500kgs or exceed axle weights , a miss is as good as a mile

Probably less than 100kg. A 6m is about 2000kg as an unladen empty panel van. So if it was averaged out over the extra 0.4m of length, it'd be about 140kg more to go up to 6.4m. But it's still only got the same engine, fuel tank, etc.

I'm reading this the other way. The van is fully loaded and ready for travel and comes in at less than 3.4t. Before uprating, what were the maximum axle weights? Roughly 1800kg front and 2000kg rear? So it might have been sketchy on 3.5t, but 4.25t seems a bit overkill. Yes, you get better brakes. But you also get stiffer suspension that'll give a harsher ride.

Don’t forget Aji has the 640 SGX van, which is on the maxi chassis because it is a big van weight wise to start with so you cannot compare it with many other 6.36m vans. The plus side is this means it has a big payload 😊

I am on the light chassis ( 640SLX) & last time I put mine on the weighbridge it came in at 3460kg. That was with full fuel, water awning, and everything packed for a week away including leccy bikes on the back. I am at 3500kg at the moment , but could take up to 3850kg though dont see the advantage at the moment.
