Hymer are now selling a Back Rack it’s modular and seems to have a neat solution for spare wheels carry box’s eBikes etc a rack can be placed on eaither Door. (I am assuming it also fits the Mercedes)

Sounds like a good idea.

Our Merc pvc had a “hollow” space for a spare but did not come with a cage in which to carry it. As we had planned to tour Morocco just before Covid hit, we had a cage specifically made by a metal fabricator in Gibraltar and now carry ours in that location.

Although very happy with our adaption, I would have seriously considered this option mentioned by the OP -if it fits the Merc too- had we not gone down our (quite pricey) route.

Frightening!
But looks like a great versatile product.
Doubt many of us would have the strength to lift a road wheel that high let alone hold it with one hand while fixing it in place with the other.
Are door hindges even strong enough to support all that weight?

Bargain but then again when you look at Thule pricing it’s probably not that far out.
