I'm leaning towards fitting a Thetford Tecma toilet like this to our Vario:

I like that it's almost a house toilet, has a built in macerator (powerful one) and seems simple to use - a bonus when taking nieces and nephews away.

I can fit a large black tank without issue and we will have a big (hopefully 500L) fresh tank, will have a dump point at out work unit to empty 90% of the time, and a rolling tote that I can empty into (in smaller amounts) if away giving the flexibility of a cassette. I can't use a cassette toilet due to the structure of our van. Payload isn't an issue.

My questions are:

1. Will any water tank hold black waste or do I need to be looking at a specific type?
2. I see people with black tanks talking about flushing through with grey waste after emptying. What would be needed to ensure there was no back flow?
3. Is there anything else that I would need?
4. Does anyone have one of these? (or very similar). Any comments?

I'm sure using this type of toilet isn't that complicated, but I'm struggling to get specific information on the best way of designing/installing a system and need a little help 🤞

Have a word with Lee sanitation in southam, warwickshire
I think they will be able to answer any toilet design enquiries, they’ve been doing marine loos for years

Hi David

We have the Dometic macerating toilet, ceramic bowl and very easy to understand and use. The black tank looks exactly the same as the fresh water tank so I am sure they are the same. The outlet from black and grey are T’d together after the discharge valves so flushing with grey is just the dumping pipe work, we can pump grey to the black tank but that is more to increase capacity rather than flush. Our tanks black and grey have flushing nozzles in the tank so you just plug a hose on when servicing and give them a blast. Our black tank is at least 6 foot from the toilet and there is minimal fall on the pipework.

If you need any photos or info just shout.
