New to motorhomes 2019
1st renewal time, what a mixed bag of results

Caravan Guard.(current insurer) quoted £1066 but reduced it by 30% on query to £780

Comfort £617

AIB £583
windscreen limit £3k

NFU LOUTH £1063
Would only quote on the basis they saw all other renewals???

Adrian Flux £772
quoted unlimited windscreen but quote arrived limited to £1500 - may be worth others checking their policies

Caravan and Camping - gave up after multiple attempts

So it like a choice between AIB and Comfort. Anything to choose between them?

Is a £3000 limit an issue on a Dethleffs A class. - anyone on here had to replace one?

One more alternative - Grove & Dean - a brokers for unusual vehicles and always include breakdown.

Are the quotes all like for like cover or are you just trying for the cheapest?

I'm with AIB and they replaced the windscreen on my Hymer 18 months ago with no quible or hassle. £3000 buys a whole lot of glass!

The quotes are like for like apart from where I highlighted. Where breakdown is an option it has been removed but some it is an integral part of the policy

Try A-Plan, they do policies with unlimited windscreen, that's who we're with now.

Look at the small print, I think Comfort has a 3k limit if you do not use their own glass people but if you do it is unlimited so check the other quotes. I think it may mean getting a pattern screen instead of original but at least its all covered...:giggle:
Here is the Comfort policy wording:-

An excess of £75 will apply to glass replacement claims – and we may not use glass supplied by the original manufacturer.
Cover for this section is unlimited provided the windscreen is replaced by Autoglass. A maximum limit of £3,000 in any one glass claim applies to all other windscreen replacement providers

We've renewed with Aviva via CMC - same price and policy as last year.

Victor Millwell is actually the trading name of Comfort Insurance. Go direct, might be cheaper as you're cutting out one layer of commission.

But often a broker has discounts that the public cannot get if they go direct, similar to comparison sites.

Well I've spent most of the day organising the annual renewal. As expected trying to get through to anywhere on the phone was a nightmare so I resorted to getting on-line quotes to try and get a feel for what kind of response I would get. My criteria this year was to reduce the value of the van (it was still at the price I paid for it 11 years ago) and of course reduce the "unlimited" mileage to something a lot closer to what I'm expecting (hoping???) to do, 10,000 miles. Also wanted UK & Europe breakdown cover, although I knew not all included it. As a final "deal breaker" I also wanted Green Card cover for Morocco, although who knows if that'll happen, but better now than what happened last year.

But first to Comfort, who I've been with for years but who's renewal quote this year had jumped up quite a bit after being almost static for the last 4/5 years. When I finally got through I indicated that I wanted to reduce the value and also the annual mileage but, guess what? There'd be no difference in the final figure and he couldn't see anywhere we could improve. I have a feeling I know why but couldn't draw him out.

So back to the keyboard and start going through the various companies websites. You'd think that there wouldn't be much difference in the questions but trying to get a like-for-like quote was next to impossible and I had to resort to getting external add-ons for things like breakdown cover, which of course all went to bumping it up even more. To cut a long story a bit shorter, after I'd discarded a couple for missing bits of cover I wanted, I eventually decided to give Saga a go; even though it wasn't the cheapest the cover was actually better than Comfort and over £150 less but even then there was a condition (place of storage) that wasn't covered properly on the on-line quote.

A reasonable wait until it was answered by a youngish sounding lass (who was working from home; I asked her) - pleasant enough but very obviously tied to a screen and script. Ah well, but she did get what I needed straight away and made the necessary changes to the quote - surprise, surprise, it had gone up £40, but in the end I took their offer as it was much cheaper than Comfort with better cover and a 3 year fixed price guarantee too. Finally the Green Card question came up and although she couldn't give me a quote unless/until I made an actual request she couldn't see any additional charge except maybe a £25 admin fee. So overall I've saved £400+, taking into account the cost of a possible need for a Green Card with Comfort.

I've championed Comfort for a number of years now as they've always been very competitive as well as a pleasure to deal with. But I did warn them when I bought the Green Card that they were going to lose a lot of business and when renewal time came around I would be looking hard. I still think that for many they could be the best but in my case reluctantly it's thankyou and goodbye and hello Saga.

Just an afterthought for possible Morocco-bound folk - I can't remember for the moment which company it was (I visited so many including the comparison sites) but it did state that if the Green Card was ordered on-line there would be no admin charge, although that may just have been for the European one. Something to check out however when you are needing it.

The policy has Aviva on the paperwork.

I meant go direct to Comfort - if you try to go direct to Aviva they'll just refer you back to "Victor Millwell".

Just renewed mine with Comfort, got a quote from Aib virtually the same.
Comfort's renewal was £8 up on last year, I dropped the mileage to 6000 saving £30.

They're all chancers.

I just cancelled my insurance with B wiser (a Liverpool Victoria policy) with 7 months still to run as I have sold the vehicle, my refund was ZERO.

My wife on the other hand received a refund from Elephant of £25 without asking, as they decided there was less risk of collision due to less cars on the atm.

They just make it up as they go along...

I was with AIB with unlined glass cover .
Then upon renewal last year they were pushing LV with only £600 cover . So dropped them. The arrogant girls attitude I spoke to certainly lived up to other reviews.

I use Together insurance, quotes are very reasonable ( for me)

Been with caravan guard for 12 years,
I tweak the cover every yea,r M H value, annual mileage, European cover, fitted accessories etc
always been easy to deal with, and includes breakdown cover/recovery WHATEVER size the M H,
I have had to make one claim in those years, ( my fault claim) and they were very easy to deal with,
and very quickly settled
I think there is more to a renewal, than just the bottom line £££

“I Been with caravan guard for 12 years,.”

Sometimes it is difficult to look elsewhere but needs to be done. I was with the same insurers for many years, thought I would look around and found that I was paying about £300 more than the cheapest quote! Went to original insurer and they reduced the premium by £350 and were rather surprised when I told them I was leaving. Which is why I am now with Together.

Have you tried the Caravan & Motorhome Club. I believe they still have an offer on where they will beat your lowest quote by £25?I switched last year from Flux, who had also misled me with the max windscreen cover. My insurance was up for renewal last week & I was prepared for the usual "bun fight", however my renewal from the C&MH club was £15 cheaper than last year!Worth a try if not too late. Tel Nr 0345 300 4290.

We had to renew our cover last week. The current one was LV but the price had gone up by £45. Tried money supermarket. First quote up was £70 cheaper. Great, let's do that. Get to the site to sign up and virtually every detail had to be filled in again, which of course put the price up. So we tried the next in the list. Exactly the same problem.

After 5 tries I gave up. So Mrs headrush tried. Eventually she had to admit I was right. It's a complete waste of time.

In the end we went with the caravan and motor home club as they promised £25 less than our current renewal.

But can anyone tell me the point of these comparison sites if they take all your details but only pass on the vehicle name to the insurers?

I had a little coming together with a new gatepost at home (3K) to make my 2 year old van look like new. I expected my premium to go up, but not the £1000 it did!! Negotiated down to below 1K (just)! Went on the CMC comparison site and they recommended a policy with almost identical cover (I have reduced the mileage and taken our daughter off the policy) for less than I paid last year with no claims!! CMC could not have been more helpful. :)

when i purchased my motorhome brand new in Sept 2018 it took me a week to get it insured, honestly monday to friday all day, the reason was no one wanted to know was that i wanted to keep in on my mates farm, parked alongside his and more or less boxed in by horse boxes. it’s a stables now rather than a working farm btw so manned 365 days a year.

Their is a MASSIVE steel security gate only opened by whoever holds the telephone no. to activate it. Surely safer than being parked at the roadside

Anyway, every insurer would insure it if I parked it on the road outside my house, which unfortunately i can’t as it’s too big, i’m at the end of a cul de sac so no room.

no one apart from LV wanted to know and believe me i tried them all, you name them i tried them lol.

the motorhome is fully comp, value £90k, no breakdown as it’s still covered by Fiat, 10,000 miles a year (not this year) and £100 excess with my missus as second named driver, ages 66 & 69. Premium when new was £346 and last Sept it was £287 with 180 days european cover.

I just hope they come up trumps if ever i need them

cheers everyone

Al ?

PS. free green card as well ?

After reading the claim about CMC beating your present renewal by £25, I tried CMC for a quote. After I had told them I was presently with Comfort, they refused to quote. So much for the promise to beat your present quote by £25. I'm still with Comfort, I find them hard to beat.

I had exactly the same response from them as you they didn’t seem to want to be getting into all inclusive including breakdown cover?

Only problem with Caravan Guard is they won't insure imports.

That's the problem with C&MC they want about £150 for breakdown cover compared to Comfort's £64.

I'm with Comfort
I had A class window chipped = auto glass repaired well, no fee

Second deep chip (soddin' German cement lorry) could not be filled, so Autoglass came with new window (not Frankia) but baulked at the look of the front electric screen and were worried they'd damage it.
So back to Comfort who were happy for SMC to replace with OE Frankia.
Their limit IS £3k, mine came to £2999,75!!
No excess
No loading of this year's quote.

(Comfort don't do no claims bonuses IIRC)
