You can stay on the car park at the Falkirk Wheel. It was £10 last time we were there. There's a bus to the Kelpies but we walked it.

when you visit the kelpies pay for the tour so much extra info and brings it all to life Im no art lover and see most of it as pretensious drivel but loved the kelpies

I'd second this. The bottom car park is usually quiet, good free stopover and they are very nice at night.
