Changed the oil on the Ducato yesterday. After having to use a blowtorch on the drain plug (thanks to the idiot who did the last oil change), all went well.

The sump however was very corroded and only 7 years old. Ten minutes with a wire brush on the angle grinder and a tin of hammerite, I am hopeful it will now last and not suffer from pin holing.

Why do they use such poor quality rubbish parts? I know why but it’s still annoying.

Do you have the undersheid fitted to your vehicle?

I do and my sump doesn’t appear to suffer like other that I’ve seen on here.

No undershield and I did notice the corrosion was much worse on the front face of it. Not surprising really.

I can confirm black hammerite is really hard to get off skin though! Ha ha

Interesting. And good for me👌🏻

ps petrol gets hammerite off, and cleans the brushes 👍🏻👍🏻

On my last van when I took it for its first MOT in my ownership (it was four years old) they recommended that I paint the sump pan to prolong its life. They said hammerite would be fine to use. Need to get the current van done.

Bizarre they use such rubbish in the first place. Though I suppose once the warranty is over, it doesn’t matter to them.

The materials could be high tech rust free last for tens of years but would you be happy to pay for that?
Mass production sadly is the resulting desire to save costs and pay as little as possible.

They manage to make the chassis rust free for the most part, it’s only a sump so yes, I do expect it not to rust.

I do take your point though, penny pinching makes profits higher when you are producing in volume.

Is it the case that the vehicle in standard form would have the underside sheild fitted, and the Moho converters remove them? If so the sumps would last better

That may be the issue.

Make it too well, they only sell one, make it cheap so it needs replacing every few years and sell several

I have seen engine under panels for sale recently and wonder why they aren't a standard fit

I have a spare new and unused pattern part centre section available if anyone requires one, I will place it in the adds shortly.

Common Ducato fault I'm afraid, along with Water in Gear box.
