We struggled to get a surge protector for a boiler that kept blowing PCB's and only found one that had to be fitted into an enclosure which made it very large and expensive, it did do the job and we never had another problem with it.

you could fit one to your mains consumer unit if there is space or is
this any good to you

That's an RCD Phill, not a surge protector.

The EBL needs protecting from under voltage and over voltage, not just Spikes. Also check the speed that the device cuts the power as some cheapo ones are slower.

I fitted an AVS30 it protects against under & over voltages and surges. I originally fitted one on my last van when we were going to do a long ferry crossing as ships generators are notorious for there crap output.

That looks good, how much did it cost?

I beg your pardon!. We used to take great care keeping the Power Supply "clean". I am offended, I may even take my case to the Thought Police. This is a disgace and an offence to Marine Engineers!. Sir!. I demand Satisfaction!. My second will call upon you!.:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Thanks to you all for your valued advice,i think i will purchase a Sollatek AVS 30,seems the best for the job. Many thanks.

Think theybare about £70
Just checked gone up a bit £79.80 from RS now, when I bought mine I think they were £64 but I had a 20% off voucher so only cost me £51.

At the moment £62 on Amazon or you can get them from China on eBay for £46, not sure I would risk a safety critical item from China on eBay as could be a cheap copy.

Personally I would only go for a branded product like the Sollatek AVS or Schaudt OVP
A component like this is something that you rely on so saving a few quid by buying a hand knitted in china plastic box is not for me!

The Schudt OVP just plugs into the EBL to protect it. The AVS30 protects your whole system, that's the reason I fitted it.

Wonder if a UPS could be modified to do what we need. The AVS30 look good but just cut the power. The APC UPS can be found cheap and output sine wave, even give you a bit of runtime if the power drops out.

Problem would be turning it on and off if you build it in somewhere. Otherwise it would be beeping at you when not on EHU

Interesting point but as a van has a 12v supply it's not really a problem if the mains drops out for a short while.

No not really a prob. Just a bonus feature along with Sine wave output.

If just the electronics could be used it would save a lot of weight as the batteries are most of it.

I have recently fitted the AVS30 in our new van, I fitted one in our old van no mains problems in the ten years we used it. So a very good bit of kit as it also checks the quality of the mains supply when first connected.

Cheap but no surge protection.?
Lenny HB not sure I understand u'r comment.
If it's over amps or over under volts it cuts out if it's a lighting Strike it cuts out.
Dont know enough to comment on another surge, help please.

Overvoltage means it cuts out if the voltage rises too high i.e the incoming supply is up at 260v which can happen on long overhead cable runs.
Surge or spike protection means it suppresses the spikes which can be hundreds/thousands of volts but only for a few mico seconds something that overvoltage protection wouldn't notice.
A lightning strike is more lightly to cause spikes on the line rather than anthing else.

That what I thought so that's why the lighting spike cut out was also included in the post. 18 edition regs suggest that a lighting spike detector/eliminator should be included if necessary or considered applicable to protect the domestic supply.

The unit you linked to doesn't have "Lightning surge protection", most of the switchgear manufacturers make Lightning surge protectors.

Thee were 2 I linked to will go back and check
