In September, we want to have a look round a bit of England we haven't been to before. So not the South West, not Northumberland, Yorkshire or the Lakes. Or London and surrounds.
Ideally, somewhere that is scenic, historic, and not a tourist hot spot. Tall order?
We'll have about 3 weeks. Thanks.

Oxford is nice (and historic), but can be a bit tourist-y at certain times of the year...

Derby is stunningly beautiful, but I'm unsure of its history (others may be able to advise).

East anglia, there is the broads, the fens , constable country, and if you’re in to birds the north coast of Norfolk has some rsbp reserves.

Got to agree with lots of others

Derbyshire (Not just the Dales the Peak District as well)
Norfolk Broads - lots of History and less tourists that 20 years ago
Wales especially North

Shropshire without doubt... Craven Arms, Church Stretton, Long Mynd, Ludlow, Shrewsbury, Clee Hill, Bridgnorth, Ironbridge... .. my favorite county even though l live in the South West.
Good call, much underrated county in my opinion.

Jings, that was fast. Thanks all.
(I didn't mention Wales because (a) we've been there quite a lot and (b) I didn't know it was part of England)

From Chester the north wales and Snowdonia . Follow the coast south to south wales if you have the time. Maybe south wales next year.

Definitely another vote for Shropshire.

Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution with lots of interesting museums and sites of interest to explore.

Stunning countryside with the river Severn running through it and beautiful towns to visit.

Have I sold it to you yet? :)

Funny old world. He is in Scotland where we think the scenery etc is wonderful and he wants to come down to us.

Another vote for Shropshire, particularly the Shropshire Hills around Church Stretton. Long Mynd, Stiperstones etc. Simply stunning.

Lovely towns, Ludlow, Bridgnorth, Shrewsbury. Then of course you have got Ironbridge, the cradle of the Industrial Revolution.

Blimey, I never knew my adopted county would be so popular.... ;-)

Yes, Shropshire is lovely and very under rated. All of it is pretty nice except for Telford. Ludlow, Shrewsbury and Much Wenlock all definitely worth a visit if you want to see towns. Land of Lost Content Museum is a personal favourite, in Craven Arms, a wonderfully eccentric collection of everyday “stuff”. Ironbridge Gorge excellent for museums as well.

Follow the line of offa's dyke, forest of dean, herefordshire, shropshire and cheshire. And you dont have to go to Wales but you might inadvertently wander over the border.

Neither is wales but another recommendation would be Shropshire and the Iron Bridge museums - stunning.

I was just about to post that he’d be better off in Scotland.
And he’s ruled out the main areas of England I’d visit

suffolk coast is nice from felixstow to lowestoff dip in and out from the a12 southwold aldeburgh rspb places and adnams brewery tour

Depending on your idea of fun- why not meander down visiting Beamish - or stop at the Black Country Museum - both fascinating bygone day living history. Then as Feltwell says Shropshire is lovely, Ironbridge is a very touristy place. Whitby Robin Hoods Bay Area is also lovely and some remote quiet places there.

Norfolk Broads and Thetford Forest. Constable Country in Suffolk, New Forest, Dorset coast, Dartmoor, Exmoor, Stonehenge, Broadway, Stratford, Warwick, Shropshire then straight back to Scotland...

Slightly off beat suggestion - my home county of Kent.

  • Canterbury and the cathedral, buy food for dinner at the Goods Shed.
  • Whitstable - trendy seaside town with great shopping, restaurants & pubs
  • Faversham, Georgian market town with great walks out onto the marshes. Macknade Fine Foods for lunch or provisions.
  • Loads of lovely beaches
  • Weald of Kent, rolling countryside with weatherboarded houses & orchards
  • Some great pubs, especially the micro breweries, first one ever was in Kent.
  • Margate and the Turner gallery, lots of little shops in the old town, eat a posh nosh at Angela’s.
  • Vineyards everywhere, do a tour and a tasting. Cider too.
  • Deal - fishing boats on the beach, lovely old town
  • Walks on the Downs with great views
  • Dungeness - only “desert” in UK, very weird place, make sure to book a trip round the nuclear reactor. Then eat a fish taco from the fisherman’s hut or stay over at the Pilot and have fish and chips.
  • Get to Dungeness on the miniature train from Hythe.
  • Broadstairs, lovely seaside town, harbour, micro pubs, antiques shops, Dickens associations and festival. Folk festival in August.
  • And much more I’ve forgotten.
And if you get fed up, move west into Sussex. It won’t be as good though ;)

But it's not in England!
Exactly

Although the Americans and some of the Europeans aren't aware of that.

But it's still the best place for scenery
