We are in the process of selling our van to buy a 2 year old Hymer.

However, we are really struggling to find insurance to cover a motorhome valued over £100,000. It seems nuts to have to struggle like this when the value of motorhomes is so high these days.

We have manged to get one quote, after many, many tries, of around £1,000. Has anyone found any better deals around at the moment?

Might not be what you want to hear but we were speaking to a couple with a new van on an MAN base who were struggling to get insurance, nobody would quote. In the end they found that only the CAMC would insure them. Maybe they are useful despite all the negative remarks on here and worth a try if you haven’t already.

Our van is in excess of £100k and we had the same issue 4 years ago when we bought it. Only NFU, Comfort and Adrian Flux would quote owing to the value.

When we went full-time, NFU said they would not / did not offer full-time cover, which left 2! Comfort were the cheapest, if you call £2500 cheap!!!

I would try NFU and Comfort and see what they say.

May I ask if you can update us too please as we will be switching from full-timing in the van this year to back packing, so will only require "standard" insurance.

Try NFU Chichester branch and ask to speak to Daniel. 😉

1% of value doesn’t sound too bad really, given that it moves, there are quite a few risks covered

We pay a lot more than 1% of our car value to insure that 🙁 but our MH is possibly worth exactly 100 x our Hymer £450 premium with Comfort

Our current premium with Comfort is £434, I asked them for a quote on the van we have on order they came back with a £1000 and can't be driven off the dealers premises until alarm & tracker fitted.
They said it was due to value, I asked for a quote on £125k it's about the cheapest Carthago you can buy, in motorhome terms it's a cheap van.

We had a similar statement when we bought ours 11 years ago when ours cost £90K, we were fully insured except theft until we fitted an alarm
That is quite normal I slept in current van on the drive for a few days until the alarm was fitted. First time I've been told no insurance until alarm & tracker fitted.

Thanks everyone. Appreciate the responses. NFU have come up with a good quote, but does not include breakdown for vans over 6.5m. At least that gives us scope to shop around for breakdown.
I bought breakdown yesterday from lv ,£152 very easy and would be the same for yours, but as to how good it is , I won't know till we need it, hopefully not.

My mate is getting the same van as me he is with NFU for his E Line, they said same price but no theft cover until alarm & tacker fitted. I think it was £620 but he pays an extra £40 after taking his wife off the policy.

There are reports of some NFU Agencies that are not interested in motorhomes. They are all independent businesses and can choose where they want to concentrate their business. However other NFU Agencies are keen to do motorhome business. Chichester and Brockenhurst often come up as good ones for motorhomes. I use Brockenhurst which includes Bournemouth and the Isle of Wight, I have never called in and done it all by phone and email.

I'm with NFU. It appears that it's effectively car insurance. So contents cover is very low. Confirm they're happy to cover the windscreen if it's an a class. And make sure you've got all the extras listed.

Think you will find because of the value insurance companies will insist on a Thatcham Cat1 being fitted
try Caravan Guard, they are motorhome specialists and breakdown/recovery is included
irrespective of size of M/H.
it's only a phone call, and you may be accomodated.

I tried Caravan Guard and they turned us down as the value was too high! Also, if I recall, their windscreen cover was up to £2,000 otherwise it affected your No Claims Bonus!

If they have changed would be pleased to hear

Obviously nfu are used to insuring half a million pound machinery so the value of a motorhome is chicken feed to them.

I got a price yesterday from safeguard for a perspective motorhome and had no trouble getting a quote although it was 1074 which i thought was ok for a 140k van? Especially when ive had a complete loss due to fire and 2 old biddies drive in to me.
Included breakdown cover too.

It comes with a suitable alarm and tracker, so no worries there.

You are right (of course) but I think the killer is/will be windscreen claims on some big A class vans as it can get close to £10k, yes ridiculous I know.

You know you can refill the AdBlue tank Paul you don't need to change the van every time the light comes on ;)

The best we found was Clubcare through CAMC for £800 for a £135k van it needed to have an approved alarm fitted and tracker before hand, they may not have been fitted straight away, but within a couple of weeks

Nfu are fine, just watch for cover restrictions, used to only cover Balkans 3rd party, not sure where they are now with it being in Schengen. Morocco also 3rd party only but we go anyway.
