Last week we were traveling to Lincolnshire for a break in the MH on the A38 when we were flagged down by a police motorcycle and told to follow him to a service station (A51), there was a very big police set up and we were told that were concentrating on MH and caravans for spot checks, anyway to cut a long story short we had all our docs checked and were then weighed, fortunately we were fine for both axle and overall weight and actually had 250kg to spare but were told by the police that they had already had several failures that morning and that the checking of MHs and caravans will likely increase as we approach the holiday season.

Stopped at 2-00am in my car towing a mini digger coming back from a night job, they kept me for 10-15 minutes while checking and when they left I said thank you very much.
Having had 4 excavators stolen over the years and not recovering any despite 3 having Trackers fitted I’m glad they are doing something and would have no issues with being stopped and checked.

Similar thing happened to me approx 8 years ago on the M62 near Manchester. It was close to the Easter weekend and was set up to catch the potentially dangerous vehicles.
Delayed no more than 15 mins and no problems uncovered.
Having said that, I now avoid the M62 when heading in that direction.

Could I ask,
Assuming you were taken out of your route, how far did you have to travel to be examined.
It was only a couple of minutes and I am pretty sure it was arranged so that you were picked up by the Motorcyle police and escorted almost immediately of the main road to the nearby services. Overall not an unpleasant experience and confirmed what I already knew that we were well within the limits.

Trail and mini digger was confiscated while we were there as the trailer was not braked and was dangerously over the weight limit for an unbraked trailer.

A overloaded mh , is a danger to the public, I am all for it checking everything
You are absolutely right except in the case of some PVCs , and I presume others but I only know about PVCs, to up-plate to 4250 it’s purely a paper exercise. So one day my van is safe at 3500 and then the next day it’s safe with 750kg more stuff in it just because of a bit of paper. Some rules are silly but I am very law abiding and stick to them.

I fully support them and wish they would make more frequent random checks on all vehicles.
Well if I’m ever burgled and there’s no coppers to attend to investigate then I’ll be content in the knowledge that they are weighing motorhomes somewhere .
A pathetic waste of scarce resources. 💡

Wow. I assume you would be of the same mind if an overloaded mh were to collide with you.

This is probably not where I should be asking this but (newbie here looking for first MH) but if I buy one which is say 3.5, surely as soon as I put some stuff in it, it’s going to be over that limit? 🤔
Very confused

Fair comment. But, given that most of the scallies who burgle, mug and the likes roam around on scooters or in cars, there is a fair chance the overall crime rate will drop too.

I wonder just how many accidents or injuries are caused by overweight motorhomes.
That's a bit unfair...accidents aren't normally caused by overweight motorhomers....
Sorry just read it again...🥴

The maximum gross weight may be 3500 but empty it will weigh less than that. The difference is what you can put in it. Some motorhomes the difference is not enough to be useful though. Beware of anything a salesman tells you, their priority is making a sale.

Anyone here who has been unfortunate enough that they needed the police will know how stretched they are for resources and getting them to come to your aid is not without long delays , and imo to be wasting their time by again picking on the easy motorist is just BS , crimes are so hard these days to solve due to lack of police , so why are they our again targeting the easy targets , the motorist.

They are also checking caravans. Badly loaded they can and do cause accidents.

Plus, by targeting certain vehicle types other offences are detected. Tax, insurance, MOT, disco drivers, unlicensed drivers, red diesel etc.

I fully support this type of positive action.

Good to see the boys and girls in blue not wasting time and energy on assaults, burglaries, petty theft and making their presence felt in our towns and villages.

Standard reply…..’not got anything better to do’?

Yep, but x amount of accidents involving motorhomes and caravans so we’re raising the safety profile.

Reasonable?

I stand corrected but are the ‘traffic’ police completely different ‘ branch ‘ than normal shire police ?
