Starlink. Trying to decide.

We run on 240v using the inverter. When a really neat solution is available I’ll change to 12v for the router and 48v required for the dish. I think the Starlink dish/router use around 6ah.

Like others we have had a variety of sims / roof antenna etc. before this service was available. The 25gb of roaming data per month is great for phone usage but soon gets eaten up if streaming sports or movies. We previously have used Three, RWG, Tiekon sims etc as well as the limited data per month there is the uncertainty of signal availability and useable speed.

Starlink has overcome those limitations and uncertainties.

Starlink has been faultless for coverage and speed for the last three months in the UK and Europe - I will not be going back to the dark ages of data sims.

I’ve added an Eero mesh extension so the WiFi range (and router speed) are improved - we can now share the data with our travelling companions cliffanger

Broken Link Removed

The Eero adds about 1ah to the consumption.

Mains at the moment, will convert at some point when there is an easy cheap option. I run off a powerbank which can take 800w of solar ( I have 300w on the van and a 400w portable) and has the 240v capability when not on EHU.

Thanks all - very interesting …. For me, the freedom from all the different territory restrictions and data caps is a key selling point - we use a lot of data.

Although we have a 12v lithium leisure battery already in the van, it feels like an inverter is an inevitable next upgrade, (either fixed or in a powerbank) which would have the benefit of not needing to bodge the Starlink.

That is true. How about coverage? Speeds?
Always been good and never lost signal😊 as for getting it for £99 if that was the case then certainly I would consider looking at it however it’s the ongoing cost of £87pm that would bother me😊

Can I just check …..the guys on this thread with Starlink, have you modified it to work on 12v or left it with 240v and run it off an inverter ?
I was going to run mine from 12v after I converted it but I could not get it working which in the end works out better as I have a smart wifi uk double socket in the back cupboard where this is connected to my 4g mifi. This i can then control and turn on and off remotely when needed either on EHU or through the invertor. It's so much more convenient that I am now not going to bother with the 12v conversion and I have plenty of battery as just had a 460ah fogstar fitted. The 12v conversion does not save a lot compared to ehu from what I have researched.

We are looking into large lithium on to the van with inverter. to run the Starlink/airfryer etc. No not cheap but we already prefer off grid and only have 1 lead acid atm.

Planning to do 6 months touring Europe in a year if possible and so far Starlink is a no brainer along with lithium means big savings on campsites as well.

It’s the £87 that bothers me too, I could use it at home so get rid of my home broadband and save £25 there, I’m on an old Tesco contract so get 60gb uk/Eu for £13 so I could get a lot of local sims for the rest of the money… but the starlink does appeal to me…🤔

It’s a must have option and worth every penny.

Leaving mine on 240v

I really like having the Starlink as a backup (purchased during the £99 offer, so a no-brainer).
I have a 5G Motorhome Wifi setup which is pretty good for most of the time - There have been a couple of times when the 4G/5G was either no signal, really slow or just over-subscribed so having the Starlink was great.
When I take it with me I dont 'enable' the service unless we really need it.
I dont plan to roof mount it as I also use it as a spare for home, but I am doing the 12v conversion so I can ditch the Starlink router.

Currently I have to run it all off the inverter which does hammer the 12v's a bit, plus then reconnect all the devices to the Starlink network, not the Van Wifi network.
By ditching the Starlink router and doing the 12v conversion, if I need to use Starlink I will just plug it into the WAN port on my existing router and turn on the POE device and it will all work seamlessly (and no need for Inverter!)

12v conversion for me on one and the other is as it came on 240v . Will prob get rid of the 240v one as we have just sold the static. Next job for me will be to roof mount it like a couple of others have done so it's fixed permanently. Cost around £25 from memory and a couple of hours to do it as per the Overlanders hack

You can even use it as your home WiFi if required too so can offset that cost
I would only want it for home use as we are in a dead spot for both data & mobile signal
One crucial thing missing from your defence of 3G/4G - you need a signal!
which is what we don't have at home .Travelling I use Digi which works perfectly everywhere including the uk
They did do a €200 deal in July for France I believe. There’s hope.
they did a 199€ here in spain until august 31st
It’s the £87 that bothers me too,
Sure it is 75€ here & is what concerns me.

On the cost per month.

Yes it is expensive but it's not a 12 month thing for us. Added to a 3 month tour where we don't pay for campsites also then not chasing sims etc data worries.

If I look at the overall cost of the trip it's a small amount to add and make the trip more enjoyable for us

See it all turns into another language for some. WAN port POE device

It's easy for you to say and I'm sure it is easy to understand really:ROFLMAO:

Leaving mine on 240v as we only use hook up pitches.

A lot of money for 3 month usage. Don't get me wrong I like the idea of it and was really close to clicking 'buy' yesterday but thought better of it. I've got unlimited data for UK and seem to have enough for whenever I am abroad plus I would say only 2 or 3% of the places I have stopped at in Spain, Germany and the Baltics have proved tricky for signal.

Nice product but £75 P/M? Nah, not for me.

I could tell you what the acronyms mean but it doesn't end there 😂 😂

I only mentioned £87 because someone else did…😆😂
