Let's say you had to choose one or the other due to border closures.

I'd love to hear which you'd prefer to spend 5 months in and why. Also which area would you gravitate to for the worst bit of winter if full timing?

Spain... cheaper and a larger area to roam if your moving around, southern Portugal is lovely but the weather is more temperamental due to the Atlantic...

Depends on what you want to do. We lived in Spain for 2 years, and have now lived in Portugal for 2 years. Portugal is certainly cheaper ( especialy for eating and drinking out) and based on the last 6 months the ‘restrictions’ were a lot less severe than Spain, and the CV figures were way lower. Spain was always much more ‘lively’ , but this year I don’t think that’s applicable 😳

Think about the rules of 90(or 180 for Spain) in 180 days in any one country, both before and after the end of the Transition Period. And then after that, the limit of 90/180 days in the whole of Schengen, which if one is already in Schengen will start on 1st Jan 2020 (unless some other rule is substituted before then) or from date of crossing at a Schengen border.

You are unlikely to be caught on the 90/180 rule in one country as there are normally no border checks between countries in the Schengen area, but there might be because of Covid restrictions.

Not a problem we'll be home end of March

We live on the coast in Spain on the Costa Blanca known for it's micro climates, we wear shorts and tee shirts almost everyday, cycle and walk in the mountains ideal temperatures, but move inland a bit you will find it very different the mountains have snow on them. 😁
When we get rain it comes down in 2 or 3 days floods can occur, but then that's it. :sun: 😎

😉 Most Portuguese carry really strong looking umbrellas in winter. :Eeek::rofl:
We are on our way to Portugal we will be there in the north on Saturday, we are visiting friends, and are prepared for rain in the next month. :Eeek:  Bob.

What you laughing at BreweryDave 😉 you didn't think they were sun shades did you. 😁
Hope you and Jac are well, we was talking about you at frogs hall on our last trip, 🙂 John said he hadn't seen you, he was telling us he has been made redundant, he also could have made use of an umbrella as it was p!$$!n down. 😲 😁 Bob.

Hmmm... I'm erring towards Portugal for if borders were closed due to it being potentially quieter, good covid stats/less likely hood of lockdown though Spain wins on better weather and more landmass but if covid causes restrictions then might not be able to make the most of that anyway.

We like cycling, hiking with dog, surfing, sunbathing and eating good food though mostly homecooked so not fussed about having lots of bars/restaurants.

Just planning ahead as i read that Portugal are considering closing the border with Spain due to worrying covid stats. We're in Spain and were going to stay till sometime in October but could make tracks.

We love Portugal for the winter, we'tried Spain, we found it rains a lot in Spain for the winter and often been washed out, In Portugal, never goes below 16c, and we use Motorhome Friends in Centieira near Paderne, Pedro and Mireille 37° 9'23.47"N 8°12'34.61"W

That is this year but 5 months not so easy in years after 1st Jan 2021.
Yes i know but not a problem for us as I'm talking about this winter hence the planning for possible border closure.

Where exactly did you read about possible border closure?

I wouldn't even keep torn strips of the "Portugal Resident" on a nail in my loo...

JJ
Can you recommend a Portuguese news source? Just trying to keep ahead of the game as our trip hangs in the balance of this covid malarkey.

Not seen it reported anywhere else so hoping it's fake news like the one about the French Spanish border in euro news

When I looked earlier there was a mention of a meeting but closure was not expected but time will tell.
