Converting a Van

I'm a Total Newbie!
I like Mel's videos and found today's interesting. He's fitting a security device around his catalytic converter after someone tried to cut his off while he was sleeping in his van! 😲

I had no idea they were that expensive and was even more shocked by how easy they are to cut away and run off with. Might be worth investing in something to protect yours?

Got a Catloc, easy to fit, comes with etching kit to put your van reg number on the fitting, and stickers for the door windows to tell them. Hopefully makes the scum go elsewhere.

If your in the van then you’ll hear them .... but I thought most scumbags grind them off so wouldn’t they do the same to that wire...?

To be honest, that was exactly my though at first. But it makes it harder, perhaps they'll not bother.

Cats have rhodium, platinum and palladium in. All worth good money. They get stolen alll the time. Lorry dealers near where i used to work got done. Every lorry had their cat nicked!!

The cable makes cutting a lot more difficult. When we used to raid chop shops, where stolen vehicles are cut up for anything of value to be salvaged and sold for profit, cats and DPFs fitted with cat-locks and similar devices were often still attached to the remains of the vehicle, instead of having been shipped off for cash.

I made one when we first got the MH, 25mm x 5mm mild steel strapping woven and welded into funny shape which sits around the Cat but does not stop the airflow round it. It would need some grinding to get off. Anyone crawling underneath would take one look and move on.

According to Catloc, it is more for the 2nd hand market than the rare earth metals, which is the opposite of what Armacat says. So both could be right; you could be buying your own cat back! Apparently, many just unbolt rather than having to be cut off, but the metal sheath and the wire just make it a lot more inconvenient.

Thieves don't generally spend time messing about with socket sets or spanners. A hand battery grinder cuts through the exhaust either side in seconds. They can fetch good money as scrap for recycling and if you know a dodgy dealer, a lot less risk or hassle than reselling them.
