I'll be fitting my SOG shortly and although I'm understanding most of the instructions I wasn't sure about the bit that says to fit the external filter housing 5mm from the door frame. It says to use a packer to make sure you have the 5mm.

What does this mean? I presume the plastic filter housing is screwed flush on to the outside of the cassette compartment door so no gap at all, so is it telling me to leave a 5mm gap from the edge of the door?

Sounds to me like you have interpreted the instructions correctly, makes sense keeping it away from the hatch frame, if you put up a link to the type and or fitting instructions we could make sure your right.

The instructions I find online differ to what's in my pack and that is at the workshop at the moment so can't post exact instructions. It's a type B SOG for a C200 cassette.

I will get a pic of installation manual later though (y)

I suspect it is the gap down the left-hand side in the 3rd image. That looks about 5mm but I don't think it's critical. The gap on mine is over 10mm. I suspect 5mm is a minimum to allow for expansion when it's hot.

That's what I thought. Just the wording of it made it sound like the outer vent doesn't make contact with the door exterior. I shall crack on as soon as I get my hole saw.

The 5mm clearance is between the filter cover and the door surround.

Hopefully the OP's orignal question has been answered, so apologies for slightly hijacking this thread...

What are the benefits of a SOG over a conventional cassette?

Every body outside smells your poo every time you use the loo, and you have to disconnect it every time you empty the cassette making a shitty job, well, ‘Shittier’

Which is why the toilet manufacturers don’t incorporate it as standard

I want one as sometimes when I am driving I seem to get the smell from the toilet/shower area coming through to the cab. Happens in my current Hymer and I had it in my old Talbot as well. Also even with little use I find the cassette does stink the shower room out a bit.

My understanding is that with the SOG and the vacuum it creates it keeps the smell well sealed and/ or directed outside through the filter.

They do say 'no bad smells in the van, guaranteed' so that is my main reason for buying it.

Other stated advantages are that because of the way it works, all contents degrade faster and do so with out the need for chemicals. So save money on chemicals and you can empty it anywhere, as in it's safe to empty in to septic tank as no chemicals have been used.

Our was factory fitted and vents through the roof. Despite what the sceptic's may tell you there is definitely no smell that can be detected outside by anyone next to us when parked up either on sites or on Aires in Europe. Never had a complaint or even a sarcastic comment.
As for emptying, again never had raised eyebrows or complaints and yes maybe it does smell a bit more than those who use chemicals but poo does smell

This is the first moho I’ve had with a SOG and to be quite honest I wouldn’t be without it now, the outlet is through the roof, so the neighbours don’t get a whiff and I don’t have to put up with smells of blue and/or bio tabs in the bathroom, it’s great👍

Often the smell is the grey tank, not the cassette. Grey tank odour can smell a lot like sewer.

You may as well put cling flim in the bowl and wrap your poo's up

Much cheaper

I sadly admit that soon I too will be 'Poo'ing' in a plastic tuperware pot and traipsing it around a campsite so may need to consider a SOG

Actually the "Thetford's in Yanks are ceramic bowled luxury, sat plumbed into a 60 gallon black tank! When you drive the macerator grinds it all up, mixes it with the grey water and pumps it to injectors on the exhaust manifolds (V10 engine don't forget) This vaporises it and is leaves the camper as steam! Thetford are a clever company you know, its only us Europeans that expect to crap in a plastic tub and empty it every morning

But, I will miss all that convenient luxury as after 14 RV's Lyn and I have a van on order with Simon, one with a Poo pot!

Better treat yourself to some new marigolds:rofl::rofl:

Seriously, hope you enjoy the new van (whatever it is)👍👍👍

We have a SOG fitted and a ceramic Thetford toilet. After 7 years and well over a thousand nights, I can say it's a very effective
bit of kit. A new filter is fitted annually, but otherwise the running cost of the thunder box is zero. We do not like the smell of toilet chemicals which linger in some vans. We have never had a smell from our karzy. We have never had any silly remarks about it either, except on forums from people who have not had one. My only negative remark is that they are now overpriced (because they are popular).

If that is aimed at me, I happily remind you that this is Motorhome FUN and we are talking about toilets so don't expect anything too serious

I am a SOG retailer as well, but we refuse to install them as who wants to play around with other peoples poo potty tank!

Hello Eddie. I like to poke light-hearted fun, too. My post wasn't aimed at anyone in particular, but the question was asked by JDK62 a short while ago, and I answered with a useful post, I hope.

My dream job is sewer jetter.

Been covered in other peoples excrement a fair few times in my current job.

I love the drain unblockers on YouTube.

Does that make me weird?

When the toilet flap is closed the toilet is fully sealed and odours can't escape. If it wasn't sealed you'd be covered in crap every time you carry it to the elsan point.
What your smelling isn't the toilet, it's the grey tank fumes coming back up the waste pipes
Put the plugs or a wet cloth in the shower, basin & kitchen sink plugholes.....smell eliminated.

There seem to be three different versions.
The afterfit one through the door that has to be disconnected each time you empty.
The one through the floor which connects itself when you shove the putin back in.
The type which exhausts through the roof which doesnt need the filter the other types have.

I think the one that causes problems for a neighbour are the through door type which have an ancient, or no filter fitted.
My through the floor one now has a charcoal filter sold for extracted cat litter trays at less than £1 each so can be replaced frequently.

No I recognise the smell from the grey. A few bottles of cola and a swill around gets rid of that particular odour.

We've had Sog Type B through the door for years.
For those times when we are parked close to anyone else I have a switch on the inside that turns the fan off.
For ease of emptying I always add a bio agent of one sort or another so all that comes out literally looks like builders tea!

I think the question has been answered re the 5mm but I think its to remind you, when you drill the door , to be sure to leave clearance betwen the door frame and the edge of the filter carrier
