I am having another try at getting to grips with Garmin BaseCamp but still not at all impressed with the software. Rightly or wrongly I have lots of my custom POI data sets in Excel .xlsx files and will need to convert them to GPS eXchange (.gpx) format as BaseCamp will not import Excel files. I have a very old primitive software that does the conversion but wonder whether anyone can recommend an up to date package which works well.

You could try the link below. Check, if it gives you the option, that you select Garmin GPX format. There will be other sites doing the same thing, just Google "Excel to Garmin gpx". GPX is supposed to be standard format but there are proprietary versions which is why you need to ensure it is Garmin you select. If it isn't an option try the default and see how you get on. :)

Thanks for the information but I want software on my laptop and not in the cloud as I am off grid a lot of the time. I do not use any cloud services.

Export the data in flat file format to the PC. Then upload to new source.

Gpsbabel any good?
Used it in the past for similar stuff

Have you tried saving your Excel spreadsheet as a .csv file?
If you have your columns laid out as -
  • Column A = Longitude
  • Column B = Latitude
  • Column C = POI Name
  • Column D = Any comments you want (this column is optional)
The resultant .csv file can be read into your sat nav \ BaseCamp using Garmin's own POILoader software.

Just a quick add \ edit to previous post that will, hopefully, stop you going through the head-banging scenario!
Column A(Longitude) and B(Latitude) must only contain numbers. hyphen(-) and full stop(.) otherwise the upload will fail.
This means your co-ordinates \ data must look something like -
LongitudeLatitudePOI NameComments

Gellyneck Thanks. The method of converting to .csv is working fine and definitely better than using the cranky old conversion software I have.
