Snow tyres or chains required in France in winter

I thought you were always required to carry chains in alpine areas?

My understanding was only if you didn't have 3PMSF "winter tyres" fitted.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Vehicles must be equipped either with four winter tyres or at least two snow chains or socks carried in the vehicle. Vehicles equipped with studded tyres (pneus à clous) are exempt and all-weather (4 seasons) tyres are accepted

Genuinely can't see what's changed. Unless in more areas? in the 16 plus years of taking out van abroad skiing we've always thought it this way.

Yes Anthea, with the operative word for me being "or"

Our tyres are "All Weather" tyres with the same 3PMSF markings for snow/winter conditions, as our former winter tyres had. They are not studded, but they are recognised for winter conditions. (y)

Exactly. It’s not complicated 🤷🏻‍♀️. One or the other.
However, it is useful if those carrying chains also know how to apply them. We were driving through Italy in March a few years ago heading for the ferry at Ancona in a heavy snow storm and there was a police roadblock stopping vehicles and looking at everyone’s tyres. If they didn’t have snow tyres they had to pull over and fit their chains. If neither they had to park the vehicle on the side of the road. People were holding up chains, turning them over and over, appearing to be trying to figure out how to put them on!

Just had these fitted - should be okay

Winter tyres are not a complete alternative to chains though. If your in a fully loaded van on a steep mountain road you may find yourself wishing you had a set of chains 🤔
too true, been in that position before, best snow tyres money can buy and still needed chains to travel 8ft on to my pitch at an aire after a 300 mile trouble free snow trip

How are you getting on with them ?? done any mileage yet ??
Seen a few vans with these fitted now, also recently some "general grabber".

So many opinions on tyres. My Burstner need 2 for the front as now have small cracks appering and coming up to 6 years.
We do mostly rallies so often on grass and already had 1 tractor pull this year..

Hi Tonka.
Only from Swindon where they were fitted to home in North Yorkshire.
Little road noise. Fitters set pressure at 79psi so going to play around with that.
I've used these tyres on a few of my 4x4's and rate them highly.
Probably put original wheels back on for summer.
Keep you posted as we put more miles on

M & S marked tyres (e.g. Michelin Camper Tyres) are still OK until November 2024.

Although, given the lack of grip I have noticed, even on a mildly gravel based campsite or wet grass, I wouldn't trust them in even a bit of snow!
