We're popping into Spain to see Shirley's brother who lives in Sitges. I'm wondering about travelling back over the Pyrenees to Carcassone because we hate the motorway through Barcelona. Can anyone recommend a route either to Carcassone or alternatively one that avoids that awful drive through Barcelona back to the South of France? We've done the Somport tunnel and also the San Sebastian route and fancy something different and a little more on the east side. Any recommendations gratefully received. We are travelling in convoy - 2 vans. Thanks Mags

Its about 2 hrs from Sitges inland up to Andorra on an excellent road,,, lovely scenery...BUSBY.

... and is down the other side reasonably easy? I was in Andorra about 30 years ago but only in a car.

I'd second Busby's suggestion. I came north through Andorra a couple of weeks back. Nothing too taxing if you take the tunnel to Pas de La Casa and you can top up with diesel at €1.10!
Just seen your post. Run down to Foix easy but take the arched bridge before Ax-Les-Thermes in the middle of you're over 3m high!

You don’t need to drive through Barcelona to get to Carcassone do you?

Isn’t it the AP7 or something?

It’s an urban motorway and it can be a real pain. We’ve done it several times and we’re either doing it wrong or it’s a difficult drive. We usually end up in a huge queue or even taken off the MW and on busy roads. We have loads of time so can’t see the point of stressful roads.

Is that a non toll road?

We have driven the toll road (AP7?) past Barcelona several times without any problem.

The only time I have had any problems at Barcelona was when I hired a car from the airport. The drive from the airport onto the motorway was hellish.

I’ve just had a close look at the map online and I can see what went wrong. Following the satnav it took us off the AP7 and through the city. Thanks Chris! As soon as you said that about the airport I realised what had happened because that route took us by the airport. AP7 is slightly further but easier. Fabulous. We’ll still try the Andorra route one way though. It looks fun. M
