Sandie and I are now in Praia de Mira on the almost empty Municipal Campismo having spent a few days north of Guarda at a small, but first class municipal site at Meda. We paid 9.5 Euros a night for 16 amp hook-up, water on the pitch and great shower and toilet facilities that included disabled facilities. There are 14 sites for motorhomes with good spacing between vehicles and grassy areas to sit out. It is monitored 24 hours too. The town is a few hundred metres walk and there are lots of bars and restaurants to enjoy. The Menu del Dia we had at O Lagar (the Olive Press) was excellent and the same for El Retiro. If you are in the area we highly recommend it. And in June the adjacent municipal pool opens and is free to funsters. A really great deal and staffed by lovely people.

We stopped overnight on our way to the coast at the free aire in Viseu and enjoyed that little jewel of a city. And now we are down on the coast which at present is windswept, but hey ho.

Any site recommendations for this part of Portugal please? We may head south towards Lisbon or north to Porto and are looking for some beach time in the next few weeks but not on huge sites if we can avaoid it.

What's the coast like around there?

Hello,
The coast is flat as you would perhaps expect, but the little we have seen has superb, white sandy beaches. This resort is just gearing up for the season, and looks it. It is small but fine for us. Most of the coast north to Porto is similar I believe.

We stayed on the municipal at Meda at the end of last year - agreed it is a very nice little site.

The Orbitur site at Gala, just south of Figuera da Foz isn't bad. Fairly large but not huge. We've been there for a while for both of the last two winters. Sadly, when we there last winter, it wasn't long after the huge storm (Leslie) had made landfall there, and the site had suffered quite a bit - lots of trees blown over. The site was still operating, though. It has direct access to a good sandy beach, which happens to be a naturist beach, so you can strip off completely if you wish. There's an interesting restaurant over the road on the industrial estate.
