About to fit a Victron BVM712. Victron provide no detailed guidance on mounting the shunt. To box, or not to box ? What is best practice?

Boats I've had have always had the shunt mounted high on a vertical steel bulkhead with a plastic spacer beneath with no other protection. In this position there is zero chance of falling objects coming into contact.

This shunt will have to be mounted on a flat surface in the compartment that houses the Schaudt, batteries and Truma heater. Either the steel shelf that the Schaudt sits on above the batteries, or on the floor of the battery compartment. Space will be tight.

If it's like mine, which is from a different manufacturer, then it fits on the negative side of the battery so it isn't "live" so to speak and shouldn't need to be shielded. Assuming there are no bare positive wires waving around near it of course. :)

The Victron one is the same, it needs to be connected to the battery negative. I have my one horizontally mounted on the floor next to the battery.
