Hi we are collecting our new motorhome soon. We have a wet room where we have to step on the shower tray to get to the loo. The tray is an obscure shape. I'm thinking we need to protect the shower tray and wonder what ideas you have?

hard wood (Cedar) battens to make a "false floor" like a small bit of decking, never step in a puddle then..

welp there's something I've learnt, they are called duckboards :D

We use a piece of cellular foam which are really sold as anti vibration mats for under machinery but the stuff you put into the bottom of a bath would work.

We bought one of these mats, some said it may start turning up at the sides, but it hasnt and its lightweight, non slip etc.
Yea I know its expensive at £3.98 but sod it ! we threw caution to the wind yet again:D2

Didn't Minxy Girl have problems with cracking on here walk through tray ?

We have the same problem with our new Burstner van. We've found two possible solutions while we been away in France. One is high impact workshop floor mat in a high density spong rubber from Bricomat for €5. We also found a foldable wooden shower mat in Aldi for 2.5€. We will need to cut both of them to fit but either should look good.

Most caravan & accessory shops sell the shower tray foam matting on a roll. Make a template using a piece of cardboard and transfer design on to foam matting and cut out. Make 2, one to use and one to replace while one in use is in the washing machine. Duck boards sound good but small stones / grit under the wood battens will crack the tray over time.

I have some of this
In a smart grey colour. I did find a supplier that sold it in 50 cm length. However it clips together in 10cm sections. It’s comfy to stand on with bare feet, looks good and of course no problem if wet.

Yes but that was because when they built our camper they didn't put in the support framework underneath the shower tray so there was actually nothing supporting the raised edges which the wooden board sat on. Neither the manufacturer or the dealer believed us until it was taken in for repair and found it was missing the bits just as I said it was. As it was repaired just before we sold it (privately) the new owners got a lovely new shower tray and new decals too as they had shrunk.

I'm not a fan of duck boards as they can put pressure on parts of the tray where its not meant to be, unless it's been designed like that by the manufacturer and comes supplied with a board as standard. Our Carthago hasn't got one so I've just used some of the 'waffle' type shower matting cut to fit in the tray itself, it's the same stuff as TinaL's round mat mentioned earlier. It cheap and can be washed easily.

If wanted you can put a floor mat (such as a turtle mat) over it, cut to shape, which will help keep the muck out of the tray as it can fall between the 'waffle' of the shower matting, and ensure if you wear shoes in there it won't make the shower mat dirty either. Leave the waffle shower mat on the tray though as it will ensure that the tray itself doesn't get marked/rubbed from the rear of the turtle mat which, being rubber can leave marks otherwise.

I have non-slip table top matting in My shower tray with felt back carpet on top. I remove both when using the shower and then refit when dry.

What about a non slip bath mat with the suction pads

Some of those stick really well and won't come off once you've stuck them down, it's like having a fight with an octopus that will NOT let go! ?

Though unhelpful if you've got one, I think a walk through shower tray is a really bad design fault which would put me off buying a motorhome that had one. Why not walk past the loo to the shower if theres not room for a proper separate one.

As Janine says, we use “foam carpet” in ours.

Available in many motorhome/caravan accessory shops it is specially made for showers. It doesn’t absorb the water which simply runs off.

The carpet is made from a dense spongey material, (I think it is called closed cell foam), it repels the water but protects the floor. It will also help if something is dropped on the floor, absorbing some of the shock.

It is lighter than wooden duck boarding and has the added advantage that it can be thrown in the washing machine when required.

When I asked our service guy what he would recommend to protect ours he suggested the best way to protect the tray is to not use anything and only walk on it in bare feet or clean slippers. A lot of the duck boards and shower mats can do more long term harm than good.

That's just reminded me, in our last globecar I put some foam strips underneath the board that sat on top of the tray, it went all around the edges where the wood touched the side supports so that it wouldn't rub in transit/when walking on it and cause damage.

Our van came with the factory-fitted extra shower duckboard, which is properly built to spread the weight across the entire shower floor - which we also have to cross to use the loo. However we too found it didn't stop the base from cracking but Speedcote did an excellent job of repair and strengthening. The guy said it wasn't the duckboard, just the plastic ageing that caused it to split.

This is a very old thread - but I am looking into exactly this topic right now....
Plastic duck boarding - foam mats - what have MoHoFunsters found best?
The sort of plastic duck boarding used around swimming pools/marinas I thought ideal, costs several arms and legs, around £90 for a piece 50cm x 50cm to fit into a shower tray without destroying it.
Advice please?

If you have to replace the shower tray it will cost a lot more than £90 ;)

Ours is a substantial wooden item. I found the original Bill of Sale for the van amongst the paperwork - the duckboard was an optional extra, at a cost of £50.00! That was in 2007.
