Click bait I know but I need a wee bit of advice.

I have a Thetford cassette in the big bus.

Under it I have found a removable panel that takes some sort of disposable/replaceable filter, not currently installed.

I also have a SOG system fitted. It has an flat, external exhaust panel. Recent digging reveals that there is a small, activated carbon filter installed, looks a bit like a 10x15cm scotch-brite pad; it looks past its best.

The questions are:

1 Should I install both?
2 If not both do I go thetford or SOG?
3 Are they worth replacing at all? It seems to function fine without them?

The SOG websites state you can run the THetford without chemical additives, does anybody do this? We use an ALDI tab just to help it along, but I don't see the point id the system is designed to operate with out.

The sites also say I don't need to use the fancy thetford bog roll and can use standards from the house; anybody got any guidance on these issues?

Ta in advance

If you have a SOG fitted, it may well mean you don't have the plumbing and electrics installed for the Thetford vent system.

We have had both on different motorhomes and they work equally well withot any chemicals .. we havn't used any chemicals for at least 10 years.

The SOG filter is cheaper to replace than Thetford and you can also replenish the SOG one with activated charcoal which works out even cheaper.

I think the filter is simply an activated charcoal filter, if so, then can one us activated charcoal filters from other sources that may be a cheaper option?

a search for activate charcoal air filters brings up a huge choice

THanks folks. I wasn't aware that the thetford also had an electrical component to it as well, I suspect that I don't have it on mine; It would be a costly and unnecessary redundancy from a manufacturers perspective. I was wondering about all that as the cassette is located in a recess beneath the box and has a hole in the top cover but none in the bottom. If its drawing air, where ia it coming from?

I will try and go for the SOG activated charcoal filter only and not use any chemicals. We are off to a music festival for a 3 day off grid bonanza so it should be a ripe chance to try it out.

Anybody got any leads on non OEM charcoal filters? SOG want £12! Thetford want £22 - bandits!!!

When we had a door mounted sOG I tried various filters nothing worked as well as the genuine SOG ones.
Thetford recommend changing every 4 weeks, SOG once a year but from experience 3 or 4 times a year is better.

Last van & current van have underfloor SOG's they work much better. Replacement filters are £24 but easy to refill with activated charcoal for about £3.

It would draw air from the toilet bowl (when flap is open) and through the cassette and then the filter befor being expelled through pipework, normally through the motorhome floor.

So, do you just pry open the thetford filter cartridge and refill? Am I getting that right?

I noted on amazon, and other places, that a lot of the activated charcoal products seem to be for Aquarium use, or bin deodourising.

Drilled a 20mm hole in the side use a cut down wine bottle cork to stop the hole. Takes approx 275 g of pellets I think.
I use the aquarium pellets, work fine. I keep a spare filter in the van and if we get any wiffs outside I change the filter, don't mind a 3 quid a pop.

As for bog paper we find that after trying lots of different types that Asda shapes toilet paper really breaks down very quickly so your not chasing it around the waste disposal point.....:D2

Bog Roll... Cheapest floralys from lidl or any, as they all break down. I get the cheapest ones from the many supermarkets here in france for the old Moho.

If you use the caravan ones you may as well wipe your arse with 10 pound notes (Actually don't as they don't break down being plastic, Euros would work though!)

Looking at the SOG website, its obvious we don't have a SOG system, however, how can we tell if we have a Thetford system.

thanks

The control panel for the Thetford will have a button with a light for the fan and the fan will run when you push the flush button.

Thanks @Lenny HB. There is a red light on the same panel where the button is which illuminates as the cassette is getting full, not sure if there any other light or a fan. I'll have a look tomorrow. Where abouts is the fan.

When you take your cassette out see if you have a square hatch with a round foam ring glued on to it that seals onto the bottom of your cassette. Charcoal filter is in there. The original Thetford filters are £14 but I’m sure you can get cheaper copies if you wish.

@LandAndy, yes if I remove the cassette there's a square plastic cover with a round hole and foam seal. if I pull the square plastic cover off there's no sign of a filter, am I looking in the right place.

Sounds like you are. Is there a rectangular hole where a filter could fit?

The cassette is specially for use with the Thetford ventilator. It has a tube running from the base to the top where (I assume) a float closes it if the cassette is close to full when travelling. The tube also has a valve operated by a bump on the filter below. Like the SOG the fan draws air out of the cassette when the slide is open. I hadn't come across the Thetford vent fan until I bought my current mh which has one. It appears to work as well as the SOGs I've had in the past.

Yes. Float inside to shut vent if full to stop fluid going down tube, and operated by the bump on the base when cassette is inserted.
