Anyone done this trip or part of it ? and any Info on pubs/ camping near the area please !
Thanks

Tried once, (Horton in Ribbleside station) the train pulled in, it was two coaches only, an old diesel railbus. It was packed, made the Tube Central Line at 5pm look spacious. Doors opened, we looked in and saw folk were jammed in like sardines and made other plans for the day. the good news was that we had not bought tickets prior to trying. Maybe some days are not as crowded.

The best bits are from Skipton to Appleby. Stay over in Skipton, lovely town especially on market days and fabulous fish and chips.
Take the train to Appleby. There is time to have a wander and a coffee before catching a train back.
Do go when the horse fair is on - it looks manic

An ex-BA colleague of mine nearly bought one of the old Stationmaster cottages on the line, but now lives in 'Railway Cuttings' Moreton-in-the-Marsh.

We used to stop off to shop at Booth's just next to Settle Station and I could never reisist walking up onto the platform for a whiff of nostalgia.

Cheers, Dave(y)

Always wanted to do this trip....so will be following with interest.

You can stop at the station pub free of charge if you call for a pint or meal.
But don't put it all over the tinternet.

Which station pub, or is a PM in order?
You beat me to it (y)

It's on the 'bucket list' so fancied doing the return journey with maybe a dining option !
See there is a special steam train in July but goes from Carlisle to Chester so leaving @ 8am and not back in Carlisle till 8.30pm too long a day for us oldies :( and seen enough of Chester!
Thanks for all the info so far...

Could be this one? The buildings left of centre is a pub popular with bikers.

Stealaway. You must be brave. My opinion,do not go to Appleby a fortnight before, during or after the Appleby horse fair as it is strictly gypsies only, no-one else is tolerated. It is lawless during the month but as normal the Police do nothing and the damage rangers from Skipton to Kendal
Been there, done that
Phil

We traveled the complete line in both directions (unfortunately not steam) ... boarded at Garsdale Head - Settle - Carlisle - Garsdale Head.

I think you can stay overnight at the Station Inn, Ribblehead, close to the viaduct and station where you can catch the train.

We have also been to Appleby the day before the fair having been warned that "If you like horses, don't go to the fair".
It was still quite busy but the travelers had not had time to get too drunk.

Well found Pennine View camping/caravan park at Kirkby Stephen about 1/2 mile from station but it's not cheap

Stayed there a few years back. It's a \ was a(?) good site.
If you turn right out of the gate and walk along to the end of the street, cross the road through a gate and it takes you onto a walk (very good path) past the rapids \ waterfalls under the road and onto an old redundant railway track (The South Durham and Lancashire Union Railway) that takes you over some old viaducts, etc. http://www.nvt.org.uk/
