Hi all, ive had my motorhome 2 years now and covered less than 10,000 miles, had some parts last year and had an oil change part of that the question is how often do you get your motorhome serviced i.e. miles or yearly ? its a 2004 fiat ducato with 26,000 on the clock.

I have been asking the same question this week. My handbook shows 2 yearly interval for servicing and I have only covered 3500 miles in the last year. Many garages seem to recommend changing the oil every 12 months. I am confused!

I have an oil and filter change annually, regardless of mileage.
Of greater importance on your 15 yr old is whether the cam belt (if it has one)/tensioner/water pump have been replaced. These belts age-harden over time (regardless of mileage) and the consequences of one breaking are or can be very costly.

A guy that rented out Fiat Ducato vans I met out in Spain in his Ducato based camper recommended that as long as you change the oil every year you’ll have very few problems.
I have always followed that advice and it’s true as far as I’m concerned.?
That’s not to say you couldn’t leave it until the Fiat recommended service intervals though.?

yeah i should look into that cheers

I have it done annually regardless of mileage also.

With modern synthetic oils I am happy to go 2 years between oil and filter changes, as recommended by the engine manufacturer.
Me too, only done 4500 miles in 22 month old MoHo :(.

But the addendum to that is "Dependent on use" Low mileage, hardly any use = change it.
High mileage white van mans here change every 15k kms. & they change ALL oils including gearbox & diff if rear wheel drive. As do I . I wondered about the kms so checked on the transit forum.15K miles is the recommendation just changed to kms here.

Our local Fiat Pro said to have an oil service yearly if you do less than 10,000 km per year, otherwise you do it at the recommended times.

I suspect some of the advice about changing oil more often for low mileages is based on an assumption that low mileage = lots of short journeys with the engine never getting a good run. However my motorhome gets good long runs but doesn’t get used every day. I am happy with 2 years.

FIAT garage will want the annual income from yearly oil / filter changes. I asked FIAT technical services for advice on this a few years ago and they said.... " 28k miles or every 2 years whichever comes first"! they said if you use the recommended oil and an OE spec filter that is all that is needed.

this debate comes up all the time and we all have our views.... and I will add my usual comment to many of these things that can be up to individual preference..... Do whatever makes you sleep easy at night, its your money and your van after all.

foud out had a new oil cooler this time last year,he changed the oil and filter,is that as good as a service?
also found out 10 years since cam belt was done and 15,000 miles should i get this done ?anyone know of rough cost?

cam belt normally 5 years or requisite miles i.e. 60k or 80k or whatever for your model but its whichever comes first so looks well overdue assuming its the belt type.

you may want to look at the air filter, possibly the fuel filter and the pollen filter if its got one.
