Hi All
I am not that technical so go gentle on me lol . I am looking for advice regarding small portable free standing self powered cameras that I can have in my van to view on my phone whilst the van is unattended . I assume this work via the internet . Any advice or recommendations greatly appreciated .
Thank you

By self powered, do you mean rechargeable? Might be better if it was connected to the leisure battery, to avoid it running out of power while you're away from the van.
I'm sure there have been posts about such things and no doubt those who have them will reply.

After a previous break-in, we now have a Tapo c120 camera, which is usb powered and stocks to a magnetic base, perfect picture, connects to the vans WiFi, and can be viewed from a phone, quite cheap, and very easy to set up and use.
We have it behind the dinette seats pointing forward and covers the cab and the hab door.

Blink cameras would do the job if your van is in range of your WiFi or miFi router.
Blink on the outside of hours connected to the wifi inside, which is always on anyway. It's been on the side of the motorhome now for 2 years with no issues and over 6k miles driven.
All I did was use the Blink doorbell cameras but disable the button, not that they can reach them that high up anyway, as they are at the rear each side but high up.
Also added a rear camera normal blink 2k one and 3D printed a bracket that clips onto the existing reversing camera. Now I don't have to get out of bed to see if someone is outside :) or I am away from the vehicle; I can check it to make sure all ok.

Ring or Eufy cameras with a solar panel would work - but you’ll need a wifi connection/router to be able to view footage remotely. Do you want to monitor your ‘van whilst away, or when it’s sitting at home on your drive, Just us on Tour ….?🤔

Reolink do solar cameras, WiFi, or sim versions. I’ve only use the WiFi ones. I’ve also got one that plugs into USB socket.

We mostly want to be able to monitor it when we are away and go out for the day . We do have a router in the van which is switched on at all times when we are away .

Tried a few and like these.

I use these they last for months if no movement, we have one in the back garden watching the rear door to the garage at the bottom of our garden charge it up before our 90 day EU trip battery lasts fine. One in the van for when we go out usb charging good night vision

The Amazon link doesn’t work Bessy765

I use a Victure baby monitor camera linked to my mifi device. Decent picture, sends message if activated, you can hear noises and also talk to a person at the camera, take photos, review footage etc.

Reolink argus 3 pro, thats what I have, but you will need a myfi router.
You can also.hear and talk to people through the camera speaker, activate a (somewhat quiet ) alarm and turn on its light remotely.

Will easily last 2 months without charging, I have them all around my house on a separate myfi router (for redundancy) and they've never run out of battery in that timescale.

I have an ''ENER-J Smart'' camera in my kitchen. It has a magnet or you can just sit it on a shelf, cordless, re-chargeable, suitable for indoor and outdoor use. It records, has infa red, sound, an app on your iphone to watch it...but..you need internet/wifi to watch it. I went to town one day and just checked it while I sat in the car waiting to collect the other son and the younger one (age 31 yrs) was kicking a football in the kitchen with the dog...yah..he got told off straight away through the camera as you can talk to who ever is there, they can hear you and you can hear them. :roflmto: You can also watch it with the sound off.
I accidently also noticed one time...the dash cam in the car, I parked in town, went into the shop, came out a short time later went home, down loaded it and unknown to me it turned its self on while the car was off, parked and locked, and recorded everyone walking and driving by. I didn't know it did that when the car was off

Have a look at Galayou cameras on amazon
We've been using 3 outdoor Y4 cameras at home for a few years now.
I believe they do a battery version but as the majority are USB it shouldnt be a problem but they only work on 2.4Ghz, not 5Ghz
They can use up to 128gb SD card or cloud to record.
Motion detection alerts to your phone and replay recorded footage.

How are you all attaching these to the outside of your vehicles out of interest?

Oh no . It will just be inside the van so we can see if anyone gets in or hopefully a partial view out the front window .

Ah, ok, no worries; i thought it might be but thanks for confirming

I'm a big fan of Reolink - especially the new stuff that they are bringing out...

However, for your needs I would probably point you to the Blink cameras. Cheap and cheerful, but a nice compact size.

Often come up on sale

The Reolink Argus 3 series are a better camera IMO but I'm not convinced you would need the extra quality or features and you can get two of the Blink for the cost of an Argus 3...

You will get a partial live view out the window as you say but infra red will not reliably work through glass.

This is the current view from our Tapo camera, it is dark currently, but would still be clear enough to identify someone.

Ignore the mess, just got back this morning from Spain.

I have blink cameras connected to my 4g Internet router. 1 each side and one inside. Its great. If anyone goes near the motorhome i get an alert. I originally fitted it to see outside when wild camping but its much more useful than I first envisaged. It gives you peace of mind when in storage too.

My wife loves it when it suddenly bursts into life and shout's "put the kettle on" when I'm returning from a bike ride.
She says she doesn't, but I know she does.

I could send a WhatsApp message, but this is more fun 😂

I'll have to try that.

I use imou cameras in the van and in the house though I wouldn't buy this make now as they are A little bulky. I think you want the properties as follows:.
1. Cameras that record when triggered by movement and send you an alert.
2. Cameras that stream so you can look in on the van any time you like
3. A camera that does require an expensive contract for storing images. Some cameras will store on cloud services eg Dropbox or an SD card (though I think that is dodgy since a thief can steal the SD card and you have no images of the thief. If you store in the cloud you have a picture even if the camera itself is stolen. Avoid paying a subscription if possible. My older imou cameras cost me £15 per year but they are due for an upgrade

Blink cameras are £8 / month but I have them at home too. All on the same contract. You can use a memory card too and not pay the £8.

£8 per month. £96 per year. Ouch! I prefer my £15 per year. But if I were buying now, I'd get cameras that can record direct to my own cloud storage since I have a Dropbox account anyway so storage cost would be zero
