I'm aiming to fit a Poynting 'fin' style antenna over the holiday break.

I believe I've got some form of hole in the roof already where a pop-up TV aerial would have gone, not sure yet, need to get my ladder out, but this is my initial preference for getting a set of cables through the roof.

The Poynting antenna is 'self-sealing', but I wouldn't want to rely on that, and I think a good blob of sealant around the antenna would be my preferred option.

Can anyone recommend a good sealant to use? I've searched the forum already and there's talk about sealants for various purposes, but I couldn't find anything about this specific application.

If you've ever fitted such an antenna and have any tips, then I'd love to hear them too. I'm planning to clean the spot on the roof well, and my initial thought is to use IPA (not the beer!) for the final clean - any thoughts on if this alcohol (not beer) would be safe?

Thanks.

The Poynting adhesive pad is good and you won’t get a problem with that and yes an alcohol based cleaner is fine to use.😊

Just use the adhesive pad supplied, and remember when you put it down that is it, one chance only

I bought six very strong round magnets with countersunk holes and used the six fitted thread inserts and stainless steel bolts. It is never going to move on its own but I can remove or reposition as required. Obviously my van has a steel roof.

I fitted a Poynting fin aerial as you describe, using a hole for the TV aerial mast. I'd removed the aerial some time before that, and covered the hole with a big plastic plate sold for the purpose, held by six screws.

The roof hole was too large, but the new aerial covered it completely, so no problem there. I used just the adhesive foam pad, cleaning the area with white spirit and methanol. The aerial didn't cover two of the screw holes, so I just put in the screws with mastic caravan sealant.

On the inside the hole was too large, so I cut a circular disc of white-faced hardboard, with a hole of the correct size for the aerial spigot. It's inside the wardrobe, but looks satisfactory to me.

I used a little Stixall just around the hole and then when stuck down with the sticky pad, I put a fillet of Stixall around the base just to help.

Did the same job a few years ago, and used Sikaflex 522, not had any issues.

I think this is the exact position I'm in. Great info.

This is what I'm looking for, thanks!

I understand, as others have indicated, that using the Poynting sticky pad is good enough, but I'd be more confident with an extra bead of sealant around the edges, just to make sure there's no leaks. This appears to be the very thing I need.

I wouldn’t get too hung up on what sealant to use, most of the ones discussed on here like Sikaflex etc are chosen for their adhesive qualities but in this case no adhesive is necessary due to the central nut fixing and the sticky pad provided.
I’ve recently fitted a Panorama aerial and just used RV sealant around the hole, with the Poynting I’d be tempted to put a thin bead around the base, after fitting too, the Panorama has a rubber seal.
I cleaned the area of the roof with normal cleaning products and a microfibre cloth, then just used alcohol wipes for the final clean.

Thank you. With the info and suggestions I've received I think I've got the confidence now to go ahead with this. Perhaps when this drizzle stops though!
