Can anyone recommend a Satnav that actually works? Got a garmin one that is a waste of space, was going to buy a Nuvi one until I looked at some of the reviews!

its what suits you; but i have a Snooper S5000 VENTURA had it that long ( 8/9 years ) its been twice superseded:xblush: . the current incarnation is not cheap at around £239.

love it its easy to use very accurate, got all the things I need,....
maps for life,
van dimension and weights,
ACSI
camperstop etc etc,
lane view and guidance.
accurate speed monitoring, which i use in KPH when over the water.

and has lots of other stuff you may / may not want...
Bluetooth
user POI
TMC
Favourites

and stupid stuff...
possibility to play Games, music, photos, video.and more...

when i decide to upgrade it will def be another snooper but i would go up a screen size from 5" to 7"

I don’t think any of them are perfect, when you say you want one that works, what do you want it to do that yours doesnt?
we have a Garmin Dezl 770 camper. It does everything we want, having taken us safely all over France Spain Portugal and the UK, we realise there are some shortcomings. As long as you don’t rely it them 100% and use some common sense, it’s, in my opinion, a good choice.

My Garmin has a habit of giving up at least once a trip & the live traffic is about as useful as a chocolate teapot! It also specialises in trying to send me down narrow country lanes :swear2:

Phone with Google Maps or Waze works fine for me. The motorhome has an Apple Car Play radio so I can get the full size screen and touch controls.

Yes I like waze, but it's too small on my iphone!

Maybe try ..."Here"...a vg app for your phone.

I believe that 'Here' maps are the same as the ones Garmin use, so if mr simbadog can't get on with his current unit, he may struggle with this.

For the record I use two Garmin units, both excellent.

We have the Garmin 760 Camper, loaded with ACSI Sites and C&MC Sites.

It has performed well for us, never taking us down an unsuitable road, up to now.

Our only complaint is that it seems to err on the side of caution. In our home area where we know the roads we know that it takes us a longer route than it needs to in order avoid going through our village. The village streets are wide and would not prove a problem.

Other than it, fine.

I have just ordered a Garmin DriveAssist - lifelong maps and it comes with a built in dash cam aswell, which was one of the benefits we wanted. You can change type of vehicle but I don't think you can put exact details in. I will know more of course when it arrives !!

Yes the phone screen is a bit limited but it seems ok in the car. Before I had Apple Car Play I used my iPad in the motorhome. However I think Apple Car Play and Android Auto on radio head units could consign stand alone SatNavs to the history books in due course, one touch screen doing everything is very convenient.

I’m on my fourth TomTom and now have the Go Essential which works very well, the only problem I have is trying to put some POIs on it which seems impossible.

Wellllllllllllllll

We have a Garmin 760 Camper and a Tomtom something or other on the go in the front. We use the Garmin for getting places and the TT for fuel, gas and other things
Both are regularly updated, both have been very reliable.
The Garmin has failed once, but when we got home I did a total reset and updated both the firmware and software.. It has been reliable ever since

And just to add to the mix, we also have one on the Chinese 7" ones ( Goldfrin or something ? ) which we get updated once a year and is always there as a back up.

simbadog , when was the last complete update done ?
Have you ever raised the matter with Garmin ?
I have always found them very helpful over the years ( have had Garmins of one sort or another since about 1998 when the first came out.. When to plot a route you had to enter way points using the Garmin map on your computer, else it took a line of site route which was fine for aeroplanes but not so good for bikes or cars :-) )

I use my I pad with Co Pilot Caravan App used in Europe and UK had no problem and allows you to put in size of motorhome

Same as our emergency backup one, just a different name

I have had a Garmin Nuvi 3589 LM and find it great. I've had it at least 5 years now and updates the maps a couple of times a year.
Better than the Tom Tom I had before.

Tried so many, only one that works for me is IGO set to vehicle - coach and route - easy

talking to a chap in a dealership who was just having a Fiat sat nav retro fitted as he was unhappy with the image size on his mobile. Size is everything; we have a Tom Tom truck thing which works really well for us but also have CarPlay linked to our radio which is a great back up in combination with Waze, Google maps etc.. Not sure a dedicated sat nav for vehicles is a must any more although manufacturers seem to throw them in with a higher spec vehicle.

Always look at road maps before a journey then use the Garmin as an aid. Ignore its directions when it wants to deviate from the intended route in my head. I know, I know, I should have used Basecamp.

The ETA, speed limits database, and most importantly the GPS actual speed display are all worth having.

Edit - forgot to mention it gives an estimate of how long we are likely to be held in a queue. That's reasonably accurate IMO.

Free updates too. (y)

Once in a while the traffic live update and re-routing has saved us from being stuck for hours when a section of motorway was closed by the Police after an accident. Often it warns of an incident up ahead but by the time we get there it has cleared. No sweat. You get used to that.

Is there an ideal satnav that would replace our Garmins? (we have 3). Answers on a postcard ...

Anyone bought a SatNav from this outfit? - price looks too good to be true but am very tempted:

CamperContact then tap through to Maps or Waze. Have this on a phone, tablet or ICE. We had a large rerouting of the roads around us and Maps was updated at the same time.
The west side of the Paris Peripherique and Rouen underpasses are the only unexpected places you have to be aware.
Had a Camper Garmin that would freeze, tried to take me across a 6'6" wide bridge and to make a 300 degree turn to save 30 yd.

Never used them but it does look interesting.
As an aside you can get the 780 from QVC for around £265 but better check it's the full spec version.

I'm having big problems with my Garmin 785 camper, it was new in February.
I have updated the software a few times which is easy, as it can be done over wifi no need for a PC and Garmin Express. Recently a saw an msg on here to say maps were available so I tried that over wifi it failed and stopped at 80% left it no change after 24 hours so I reset it. It then wouldn't try again with not enough memory error.
45 minute call to Garmin trying various things all failed got told to use Garmin Express on PC.
Express failed at 10% download repeatedly. Another 30 minute call to Garmin still failed got told to look at the Express log which is hidden and needs special software to retrieve.
Retrieved the log it contains nothing useful to a mere moral so on the Garmin for a third time.
Got told to send log to them, together with a compressed copy of the file structure on the satnav. Followed instructions to remove parts of the file structure to make it small enough to email. But its was still 700 old MB which is to big to send as there is a email limit (maybe at my end of 500MB) so I send all but the voice files to see if thats ok. That was yesterday waiting for a reply.
I currently have an expensive satnat with no maps , chocolate teapot comes to mind.

When it worked I realy liked it especially the coming up display where down the side of the screen it shows the distance and general direction of three things. The next fuel, the next toilets, and the next parking place, (ie Aire in France). It also replaced the dash cam making the dash board less cluttered.

I fitted the , does everything that the others coat half the price. I am listening to the radio at the moment.
