We are thinking of heading to Venice and the route down the East side of France in a coup,e of weeks
a26-24 to Dijon/Chamonix /Geneva way
or A26-A4 Strasbourg/toward Milan way

Then probably on through Croatia etc, but having not been this way / far before id be interested in any tips/tricks or avoids to the Venice part of the trip.

thanks in advance

We're currently on our way to Croatia and have done East side of France route. We're in Garda at the moment and have done so far:

B'head to Canterbury park and ride
Eurotunnel Calais to just outside Reims
Reims to Troyes
Troyes to Beaune
Beaune to Annecy
Annecy to Lake Maggiore
Maggiore to Peschiera del Garda

Next stop is Palmanova, so we'll let you know what is was like getting around the Venice area. We went via Chamonix to see Mont Blanc and the tunnel was a nightmare, queuing for and hour and a half.

And we didn't get stuffed by the red ****e at home so all's good.

Forgot to add all routes were following Garmin 780, with tolls switched on. The Beaune trip was no tolls, all others were quickest routes.

We went through the mont blanc tunnel a couple of years ago , no problems but it's very costly, then down to jesolo, plenty of campsites and easy public transport right into st marks Square.

The fastest route would be Calais, Reims, Metz, Strasbourg, Basel, Lucerne, Lugano, Milan, Verona, Venice.

But given that you are on Merseyside, then the better (and toll free) route would be:
Harwich, overnight ferry to Hook of Holland, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich, Innsbruck, Trento, Verona, Venice.
You could even get in an optional drive over the Gross Glockner pass which is an amazing experience in good weather (€27 toll).

Unless we are heading to western France or Spain we always prefer to use the Harwich/Hook route.
Not only do not have to deal with the queues at Dover or Folkstone, the cost is similar, and if you take the night ferry you get a cabin (not optional!) and so go sleep across the sea to arrive early doors in Holland.
You can make the German border in time for a late breakfast, which puts you hours ahead of the 'English wave' of vehicles heading south and east.

Just arrived in Palmanova. From Garda to here took us along the E70. A few roadworks but nothing too bad to slow us down. More roadworks after the Venice turn off, but still not too bad. Going in the other direction it was really bad as the three lane motorway goes down to two at the roadworks, backing everything up for quite a few miles.

€20 for the toll for 235kms on the motorway.
