Looking to buy
Hi all, my name is Mark I'm from Dublin Ireland ,myself and my family are looking to buy a motor home to start having some adventures around Europe.

In Ireland it's very slim pickings for motor homes so we are looking to buy from the UK,

One reasonably priced place we seen selling are grant trailers in Bucksburn, Aberdeen, AB21 9EG has anyone ever dealt with them,

Any suggestions for places to purchase are greatly appreciated

Hi Mark and welcome to the forum. There are as many rouge sellers as there are honest ones and difficult to know who to trust.

Having been scammed over £5K on a motorhome that was for sale online and never getting my money back, be careful along the way.

Hopefully someone will be along with an answer to your question, as I’ve only ever brought private. One thing to consider is the warranty, if a future van comes with one and that would be the need to return the van to the dealer to get any work done. It’s a pain for those on the mainland, but throw in the need to cross water and it would become far more challenging.

Good luck 🍀

:welcome4: You will hear of tragic deals from so called rogue traders, even those that have been around for longer than anyone can remember. Personally I have had great service and help from Don Amotts and also like Lowdhams but not Brownhills. Let the debate begin !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Mark, as the result of a chat on a Carado FB page I gather that many French forecourts are full of new Vans,
any thoughts about buying from a mainland EU dealer especially if your going to tour a lot on the continent.

I can recommend these two dealers:-

No I have to admit that my Son's are Directors in each of these dealerships, but, if they were dick's I wouldn't recommend them and each of them have plenty of recommendations on here from other members

Living fairly local to the address of the dealer you mention “Grant Trailers” I‘ve never heard of them locally and all pics of motorhomes on their web site seem to be from outside houses and cheap so I’d stay clear, but I will take a drive round that way tomorrow and confirm if their real or not.

I’ve lived in Aberdeen for some time and have never heard of them.
could I suggest you amend or re post with Aberdeen in the title as you‘re more likely to attract more info.

:hiya2: :pink:

What I have found over the years after many caravans and motorhomes is the main strength of a dealer is the support network (servicing, parts etc) than the sales team.

The 2 motorhomes we have had, one came from Lowdhams at Huddersfield and the other Travelworld Stafford. Trying to get through to Lowdhams for a warranty claim took 9 months in total for a tap. No problems with Travelworld other than being eye wateringly expensive.

Ones I would not recommend is Spinney and Leisure Sales.

Autotrader is a good place for a search.

I’ll vouch for Alan Kerr motorhome in Paignton. Great to deal with.

Their sales director is on here Simon-Alan Kerr

Bought my first van off Simon recently and heading off on our first big adventure tomorrow. Very happy bunny 👍👍

Be aware of the many scam adverts on auction sites. E.g. showing prices too good to miss, deposit required, you can't view as working abroad/on an oil trig/have broken leg 200 miles away/shortage of 'showroom staff'. Take note of photos of stock taken at a multitude of different locations and which have been lifted from other genuine adverts ...........etc. etc.
On eBay look at 'Sellers other items' where you'll sometimes see dozens of bargain but faux adverts for everything from m/h's to caravans, boats, tractors, upmarket cars etc.
Check out the vehicle's MOT history by entering its reg'n no. on the DVLA website.
Good hunting!

This is exactly what I'm trying to avoid,so when I find a few I like I will be flying over and meeting the seller/garage in person ,no deposit over the phone or on the website crap

Signature motorhomes at Preston bought our last van from them and they have been very helpful with one or two issues I would certainly recommend them , Pilote and Adria and possibly Hymer later this year, happy hunting.

Hi,
well like other members, I can definitely definitely recommend Simon-Alan Kerr.
A more honest, straight talking dealer would be hard to find.
You would be in safe hands dealing with Simon. 👍

As you are in an EU country have you thought of importing from Germany?

A vote for West Country Motorhomes, Somerset.

We have bought several m/h from them over a period of about 30 years. Always good after-sale service and pleasant to deal with. Bought our present motorhome in August 2021. Only one warranty issue that was booked in together with first annual habitation check and part replaced on that day without fuss.

We bought our latest van from SMC in Newark. Having had to have some warranty work done have been really pleased with the service we got. Both sales and aftercare have been good in our experience.

You may want to take a look at the EU importation rules.

It's not as simple as it was to bring a vehicle from the UK into Eire as the UK is no longer in the EU.

He has had his five free posts so unless he joins the forum we won’t hear from him again🤔

We had need to have a lock fitted and went to Choose Leisure on the A28 west of Canterbury.

We had no booking but within 45 mins. we were sorted and away. I have also bought parts from them - they do not have a shop but reception called a guy down, looked at the part and was back in 5 mins. with replacement.

If that is there normal service culture I would recommend them. They have a big stock of MHs for sale.

This post is not much use to our Irish OP but is for general cosumption.

I would also recommend West Country Motorhomes in Somerset.
