Adria Twin 640 SGX
Exp
A few years
We want to get a replacement mattress for the centre section of our bed. Van is an Adria Twin SGX, and the central bed bit raises up and down. The mattress supplied is super uncomfortable - it's hard and only 10cm thick. I get the most dreadful back ache in it after just one night. I added a 7cm topper to it, which makes it super comfy, but I think the combined weight is probably too high for the motor, so we're looking to replace the mattress.

I think we could possibly go to 15cm deep, as it's always covered by the duvet. That would mean we could go for the Duvalet DLite which weighs 35% less (than something, who knows what) - but it's described as medium firm, so I'd be concerned about spending all that money for no more comfort.

Another option I found is customsizebeds - who do allow you to specify 10cm thickness, but again I'm worried if it's even possible to get a soft, comfy mattress that's only 10cm thick.

Anyone got any other ideas? Anyone with experience of either mattress - would they be soft enough for us?

In our Motorhome, we have the "Froli Bed System" square plastic springs fitted under a cold cure foam mattress, and the beds are very comfortable.

It could be that retro fitting the Froli system under your current mattress (if you don't already have it of course!) will make a big improvement without adding too much additional weight?

We used custom made beds. Great products and a great service because you can order what you want. (y)

March hare, that looks interesting? Did you find it made a massive difference to comfort? And have you any idea how heavy they would be for a small double?

Mikey, I've been chatting to them & Duvalay, but I think the really problem will be weight. Our current mattress weighs 5.9kg and the lightest I've found from either of those weighs maybe 12kg (since we are a little narrower and have a cut out)

Suggest you talk to Jonic:
We did and got a superb - and relatively light - mattress made to order. They may be at the show this week if you are going. Cheaper than Duvalay and nicer to deal with - found Duvalay rather arrogant.

Hi, I've just found this Froli single bed kit on Amazon, although I'm not 100% clear on whether it is only for the springs. It states the weight as 3kg, but would be worth checking with Froli what you'd need for your bed size.

Also ref your question, the Froli Bed system is installed as standard by Hymer, so we've not tried without it, but it is certainly a very comfortable bed with not overly thick mattresses.

Unless I'm misunderstanding, you must be very tight on payload if you're worried about the weight of a mattress topper.

Have used Froli on a boat, not that impressed but it is light.
We have just replaced our mattress with a 30cm thick one from Custom sized beds.
Very comfortable.
It weighs 19kg but the old mattress was 10kg with 2 toppers at 5kg each so the change in weight was negligible.
Great service and delivery in 3 days.

It may be worth determining which mattresses you have found suitable. Perhaps the one at home or testing out mattresses in a store. Find out what combination of foam, springs, tempera or other mixtures of bedding make it suitable for your back. I truly would consider weight to be secondary to a comfortable bed where you spend most of your time when in the van.

Just a correction, I meant 20cm not 30cm
The existing bed was 10cm foam , to which we added 5cm toppers , so about 15cm but it killed my back.
The custom sized bed mattress is firm but very comfortable.
Our mattress sits on proper slats in a steel frame.
The gas struts on this are not strong enough to lift either the old combination or the new one.
They are 650N struts.
I think I need about 750 or 800 , not a lot more.
I've found a few places that sell them and customize your order etc.

You could go to a local Foam shop as I did, and ask their recommendations. Much cheaper, easy to restuff your present mattress covers. You could at least feel the foam, and it would not cost the earth to retry if it didn't work out. We are delighted with ours, 2 inch high density with 1 inch memory foam topper stuck on top so it is one item. Don't know about weight but didn't seem any heavier. And the cost was just over £100. Much better than the Auto Trail original. But maybe you're not inclined to DIY, and would be happier paying more for a known brand.

Beltie - no, it’s the weight of the bed which is raised by a motor. That motor has failed, which is either because the bed‘s too heavy or the randomness of the universe. We suspect the former.

I think it might be worth trying a custom foam cut as at least it would be cheaper. I’m not keen to reuse what we have, as firstly it can be as purchased when we come to sell, and secondly I think that as it’s upholstery fabric, it’s too ungiving, which doesn’t help comfort.

I wonder if the motor that raises the bed can be beefed up?

We got ours from Ikea, they are foam and there are a few to choose from regarding how soft or hard you want it. They come with a cover and not to heavy. I think the price is around £100.

Peter.

For us, the quality of sleep outweighs all our other considerations!

We have used Bodymould three times for five different caravan/motorhome mattresses and toppers. I have done plenty of comparison, and they are not the cheapest. However, far more important for us is that their 'Supreme' class of 8" triple layer memory foam is fantastically comfortable. We use the same foam on our bed at home! It is however, 5 kilos heavier than the billiard-table-hard foam thing that the motorhome came with.

The do offer thinner, lighter, but still very comfortable double layer foams. Have a look at their 'Standard' and 'Deluxe' range.

They do cut to fit and our centre electric bed has a corner cut out. They got the cut exactly right. Highly recommend (and not on any commission!!)

Thanks all - for all those saying quality of sleep outweighs all other considerations, well, I agree, except that we have an electric raising bed whose motor has failed due to excessive weight. So we won’t be putting any 30cm thick mattresses plus topper on it anytime soon.

Our current uncomfortable mattress that came with the van is 10cm thick and weighs 6kg. I added a 5cm topper that weighs more, and hence the issues! At the moment I’m considering the Froli system, then if that’s enough try to find a light enough softer memory foam mattress that’s 10cm thick. I think Ikea do one, though I don’t know the weight.

I was also wondering if the motor that raises the bed can be replaced with a beefier one, or would that be too much of a drain on the battery.

Just a quick point about the Froli System.
It needs, I think, to be placed on a flat surface. ie. if you have a slatted base it may not work well because the 'units' can stick down between the slats.
It uses about 1.5" of height , so you can see it can only deform about 1" or so.

It does allow you to have softer units where your shoulders are for instance and it does include' stiffening links' for other areas. Because it's in units, it easy to adapt it to different shapes.

We got our replacement for a N&B at ikea, its lovely.

The Duvalay foam mattresses are extremely light, not cheap but very comfortable! They make them to measure, any size or shape you want. But they are 6 inches thick, and need a firm base (not slatted) so maybe that's not going to suit your set up.

The beds in our Hymer have froli springs on top of flexible slats. Very comfortable.

I think there's a way of laying Froli on a slatted base? But anyway, we've now heard back from Adria that the bed lifting motor has a payload of 150kg on top of the bed, so there's no way our heavy topper is the issue.

They are sending out a replacement motor so let's hope all goes well. Must admit there have been quite a few niggles with this van.
