Our shower tray cracked during our latest trip. There had been a small hairline crack in the glaze for a while

It looks like a major job to replace, involving a lot of labour to remove the sink unit and shower surround.

Does anyone have any experience of having a shower tray replaced, and how did it compare to the £450 quote I've had to have it repaired by Speedcoat, with a 10 year warranty?

We had a shower tray repaired with Speedcoat several years ago by a company near Durham - they did an excellent job and was better than new. From memory they had it in the workshop for 2 full days.

Thank you. Their quote is for a mobile repair at our house.

£450 seems reasonable, it would cost a lot more to be replaced

I would go with the speedcoat , I have one shower tray replaced under warranty 4 months waiting for the shower tray to be delivered to the dealer and a week to have it fitted . Only for it to crack again out of warranty so had it speedcoated which seems fine up to now .👍

There’s a speedcoat specialist in Wiltshire. I got him 3 trays that needed repairing and one was a lot worse than yours. They did a brilliant job and a lifetime guarantee to boot.

Think it was around £300 a van, but a lot cheaper than replacing and a lot less hassle.

Here we go. Best to arrange to take it to his workshop.

Interesting.
Once upon a time Speedcoat gave a "Lifetime" guarantee.
Then, that became a "Lifetime of your ownership" guarantee.
Now, it would appear that it's a 10 Yr. guarantee.
Is that 10yrs. regardless of ownership or 10yrs with same owner?

Thank you!

Martin is actually coming to our house next week to replace the burner and jet on my Dometic 3-Way fridge!

I will give him a call about the shower and see what he says.

It's 10yrs if in your ownership, so not transferable.

My only concern is the reason it may have cracked. I am guessing that it is a lack of support underneath in some areas.
I agree. That worried me too. There is a small access hatch to the space under the shower from the under-bed locker, so I hope they may be able to add some extra support.

The shower tray cracked quite badly on a previous Motorhome we had and it was due to lack of support underneath it flexed quite badly so before I had it speed coated I drilled lots of small holes in the unsupported areas and sprayed in some expanding foam placed some full water containers on the top to prevent the foam distorting the tray had it coated and was better than when new with no flex at all still perfect when we sold it over 10 years later

On my previous van, I had my drain fracture in exactly the same way. Repaired it myself with builder's foam underneath to support the tray and the actual crack with Araldite and car touch up paint. Bit of Wet&Dry to blend in and to quote Eric Morecambe -you can't see the join'.

I'm looking into trying to reinforce the underside either before or after it's repaired.

I would go with speedboat then make a wooden duckboard to spread the load over the shower tray surface . I had similar problem caused by poor support beneath the tray .

When I had my shower tray repaired by Speedcoat, they said under no circumstances should I use a duckboard in the shower. It was then in writing on the paper work I got after the repair. 🤷🏼‍♂️

ok if it’s part of thier warranty then I wouldn’t either untill after warranty expires .
From the looks of the straight line crack running across your shower tray I would suspect it is not adequately supported underneath . This happened to mine . I carefully chain drilled around shower tray and removed the top then replaced the compacted foam sheet with a denser similar material from building suppliers . I then overlaid it with a thin piece of ply and sealed the removed section of tray back down with Hippo pro 3 sealant ( excellent sealant ) . Then made up wooden duckboard with 2 inch wide spreaders .

A few photos of my repair 5 years ago . I was shocked how poorly it was supported with low density polystyrene packing . This was Benimar . I replaced it with building grade high density polystyrene insulation covered over with ply sheet .below is link to sealant used .

The duckboard is made from a reclaimed garden bench seat with hard wood slats . Sanded down and applied 3 coats yacht varnish
Made template for area first from hardboard and then cut spreaders to size and placed finished slats on top .

I tried the expanding foam idea but didn’t work for me so I very carefully cut the top off using a Stanley knife and replaced the low density polystyrene rubbish support material used by Benimar that over time became compressed !

Correction I didn’t chain drill it off . I used a Stanley knife and very slowly and carefully cut it off . Not easy but taking time possible

Has the Bedec multi surface paint worked ok. I’ve looked and it says water based, so not sure. Would love to paint my shower tray as well. I had it Speedcoated but had a blowback up the grey waste pipe that discoloured the tray in areas. My fault as I had forgotten about my adding citric acid to the grey tank and then a quantity of bleach 🤦🏼‍♂️

How long have you been using the tray now it’s been painted.

I’ve messaged the company and asked, but it’s good to hear from someone who has actually used it.

Thanks in advance 👍🏻
