i have just received notification to renew my license. I am going to be 70 shortly and want to maintain my C1. The form sent by Dvla states this is free but to apply I have to complete a D2 and D4 pack where there are a table of charges. Is there a charge to do this or not. I have the paper license and cannot get any answers from DVLA. Can anyone help.

You will need a medical check which won't be free. There is an organisation called Doctors for Drivers - or something like that who have reasonable charges otherwise try your GP. :)

The detail of renewal is covered on this link although I don't think it mentions C1. But the forms are available at post offices I believe. It would be worth visiting your local PO first and ask their advice.

Thanks guys I have already booked my medical with D4Drivers costing 50 pounds instead of £120 at my GP. I have the packs but it is the contradictions on the forms that is confusing and you cannot seem to speak to the DVLA to gain clarity on what they charge if anything.

This is how I completed my D2, sent off with D4 and back within the week
NO CHARGE

Is there a charge for changing from paper to plastic? I think that might be £20 unless you are changing name or address when it is free.

I still have a paper licence and it won't be too long before I reach 70 and guess it will then be plastic.

The thing is Royal Mail changed our postcode circa 20 years ago, but the licence still has the old one (naughty I know, but never got round to sorting it with DVLA and nobody has ever queried it. Have rented dozens and dozens of hire cars abroad, but again never queried), so be interesting to see what happens when I have to get a new one. We still live in the same house, at the same address (apart from the postcode). ;)

I think I would ask for a photocard before you get to 70 because of the "change of address". That way it would be free :)

No, the photo does.

If asked state the above + I didn't change the post code they did. I haven't moved.
Post code in reality is nothing to do with an address apart from making it easier for letters to be delivered.

You can only do it online if you don’t want to retain C1 which the Op does.
Agreed, hence my paper application, my point was that it is free as it is mandatory to renew at 70 so you get a photo-card licence, you must send a passport type photo for 1st time photo-card licence, thereafter the passport one can be used.

I think I sent a spare passport photo off with my application but I cannot remember as sent off on 6 June and still waiting !!

When I changed from paper to photocard I didn't supply a picture just told them to use the same one as my passport

Thank you all for the info very usefiul

They can only use your passport photo if it has been renewed in the 5 years prior to changing your licence. Mine wasn't so had to send another photo!
