I will have to renew my licence next year as I will be 70, also I will need a new picture the one on it now is due for replacement at about the same time. I can do it on line if I have a current passport, but my passport ran out last year and I haven't renewed it because we cannot go abroad due to caring responsibilities. Does anyone know how to update a driving license picture without a passport please?

Just get new photo taken in booth at supermarket or similar and send with completed form.

You can take a selfie, against a plain white-ish background, then use an app to size and center it properly then submit it as a file with your online application.
I use SEE EDIT BELOW app from 'playstore' and my photo was accepted.
I was very tempted to send my previous photo to see if they noticed... Then thought better of it incase it caused delays.

EDIT.....
Ignore photo resizer.
It's actually called 'passport photo maker' from playstore.

Don't all licences show that?

The old licence will be valid until 2400 on the day before your birthday and you will renew from 0001 on the birthday.

I cannot see why you would have to pay a fee.

Same as PJ, we uploaded our own selfies.

'Cos the forms say if you 70 or over - it is free... Assume that the day before you are seventy it is not free. :ROFLMAO:

Just having a smile to oneself.

Pop into the post office..they will do it for you . Ours has a Booth with which a new one is taken to the correct specs and it's sent off by the post master. No cost was charged.

Kev (y)

I also used the booth at the post office. Found it impossible to avoid reflections on specs so my passport photo is without them, although I always wear them being more than a tad shortsighted.

You have to take them without glasses anyway.it isn't allowed. If you have to wear them for medical reasons you have to supply a doctors statement. That is what the wife was told

I did the passport photo myself, I tried several and they were mid range on their scale of suitability, I renewed my passport so the driving licence was easy. We also renewed our daughter 's passport, all her pictures were rejected by the computer but no problem with the passport. It was lucky that I decided to renew the passport as I needed ID for a legal matter.

Just renewed my over-70 DL. According to how I read the blurb I needed a new photo and also to pay £17.
As I had a spare copy I actually sent them the same photo as I have not changed appearance at all (lucky me) and it came back withour problem. Also a refund cheque for £17.00.................
