Hi everyone,

Looking to buy and converting my first campervan for rental purposes, getting conflicting advice and torn between Renault Trafic Sport / Vauxhall Vivaro Sportif and higher mileagae VW Transporters. I thought I had been priced out of these but have found a supplier of these yesterday, that arent VAT registered vans.

Of 5 options assuming same conversion spec what would you feel you would do (appreciate it is difficult without having seen van and knowing condition, and there isnt a right or wrong but keen to get a consensus of opinion if possible

Grey Renault Trafic LWB 16 plate 50k miles - £32,500
Grey Vauxhall Vivaro LWB 18 plate 50k miles £32,500

White T5 LWB 10 plate 130k miles - £28,500 - no aircon but v smart looking van
Grey T5 SWB 10 plate 109k miles - £25,000
Blue T6 (i think) 16 plate 90k miles - £36,000

All VWs have wheels, spoilers, side bars etc

Thanks for any comments in advance.

I'd go for VW.

The post 2010 engine is great, even better with dsg, but check if it's a 180 model as early ones have problems.

Renault have been trouble for me but others haven't had problems.

Injectors tend to get stuck etc.

VW for me, but check that at that mileage the clutch concentric slave has been done. My son has just replaced his ,flywheel/clutch and slave cylinder as the slave cylinder is prone to leak around this mileage. Common failure but make sure flywheel gets changed at same time otherwise may have to repeat job when vibration issues start( dual mass ). Look at around £1400 to get it done properly
My son is selling his but it’s dual door and on air ride so probably not what you are after( magazine featured in July VWT magazine, good place to find vans and full of info for conversions) 5A00528E-F0D2-4BDC-9663-13741AB9F956.jpeg

I think if it's for rental the first thing is to look at is what mileages and how long you expect to rent it out for. Add the mileage and age to the ones your looking at and see how the residual value looks. If you're running it as a buisness it needs your money head on to figure out the best buy. I must say I'm surprised at how much value they retain at that age.

They seem expensive, surely you can get a decent base van with ac for £10k then if you want to jazz it up a bit buy some alloys.
Personally I'd be looking at Boxer/Ducato vans.

Add the VAT and it’s a new van for about the same price…….once you start cutting into it, the warranty will be out the window though. (y)

Thanks everyone for your advice, all taken on board.

I am quite happy with the yield and residual values. A couple of other things if I may?

What are your preferences with LWB v SWB and importance of Aircon?

Cab AC essential for us, driving through Northern Spain the other year the van thermometer was reading 44°c at one point, I was scared to stop 🥵

I might be wrong but I would have thought that renting out a bought in home converted motorhome with no certification of the electrical or gas installation would be dodgy from a legal point of view. Even if those are checked if there's an accident and any question of injury from the way the conversation has been done it could still be a problem. Have you asked for any insurance quotes to include personal injury and public liability?

Agreed needs to be checked etc.

I would have thought a VW is more desirable as a rental vehicle than the Renault.

I don't think it matters that much. If you look at rental companies you could see how their booked next year. I think the majority on here are motorhome ( with proper showers/ fridge freezer/ toilet compartments) rather than campervan owners with most based on fiat/ Peugeot/ Citroen although ours is ford based. I think theres a bit of brand snobbery with hymer and mercedes but in general I would have thought most renting look at the interior/age fitting facilities etc.

Thank you Chris. How are you keeping?

John.
Both good thanks John.
Managed to meet up with the TRIBBY bunch at Bramble wood campsite Brown Moss Whitchurch Shropshire, last June. Many have now swapped their Tribbies for C class or A class van but still in TRIBBY group. Phil still keeping the faith with his 650 though👍

Morning

Keep looking for your base van as I picked this up the other day with 104k miles on, T5.1 180bhp with 6 seats with roof bars etc

I only paid 14k for it, just had cambelt done, New EGR valve and new oiler cooler fitted

They are out there but don't rush
