We have recently bought our first motorhome through a local supplier which is on a 2001 Peugeot Boxer. The handbook talks about a red key that is used by the technicians when work is done on the vehicle. This red key wasn't with the two sets of keys we were given. We have told the supplier that it is missing and we hope they find it - apparently the technician used it when the vehicle was serviced prior to handover to us. Does anyone know how vital this key is and what has to be done if it is lost?

I think you might find that the Red Key is the Master Key for starting the vehicle if the others are missing or possible for service issues.

Hi,
The red key is essential to programme any new keys to operate the engine immobiliser, without it the immobiliser has to be replaced which is very expensive, you should contact the dealer to get either the original red key or fit a new immobiliser (around £800 I believe).
Regards,
Chris

Quiet right you need to get the red key, and as previously mentioned it costs £800 to £1000 to replace

DONT go down the avenue of having the immobiliser replaced, I remember reading that someone did this and it caused alsort of other problems

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news

I was told by Platts, the main Fiat agents in Stoke on Trent, that there is a local key cutter who could make you a new key for about £300

Hi,
But of course any new key would have to be programmed using the red key, if its not programmed it will unlock the doors etc. but not start the engine,
Regards,
Chris

This is yet another of those rip off moments. when I bought my ford escort van the red key was missing. The dealers had lost it. A replacement cost me £50, the chip from the existing key is read by computer, the computer then programs an new master (Red) key, straight forward job costs pennies yet I thought £50 was a lot, as for £800 - £1000, well get real.
If for some reason that I cannot imagine that is the only course of action then reject the van and get one that has the appropriate key. It is down to your dealer to sort it out not you.

On no account take delivery of the van without the Red key, it is the possible source of untold problems.
I was told this by a dealer, who said he would not accept my van in part exchange without it, and to be certain to get one before accepting delivery of any new van. I didn't argue he should know.

my niece lost the red key to her fiat and when she went to trade it in the dealer offered her £1,000 less if she couldn't provide the red key ...be warned!

As said by previous posters, the red key is ESSENTIAL, yiu do not need it to drive the van but you will need it for diagnostics/service etc.

Do not buy the van without it as you will get caned on a p/x

the red key is linked to the ECU and this needs replacing hence the £800 + cost.

no way round it except a scrappers and get the ECU, red key, immobiliser unit and all door locks.

replacement black keys also need the red key to program the inbuilt transponder so without it you cant even buy normal replacement keys unless you just want to manually lock the doors or turn the steering lock off but the ignition wont work.

we bought a brand new van - Swift on a fiat in 1996 from Brownhills
no red key in sight, none forthcoming from Swift or Fiat or Brownhills - silly me for expecting anything else really, none of them seemed remotely interested despite the warning in the hand book that it was essential

but we did have the security code and never had any problems - mind - we didn't need another key cutting

the red key

I have never heard of this red key..........so it was a worry to me.... as the agent never passed one on.

What I did get was a card the size of a credit card and looks like a credit card, with a picture on of a BLUE key on one side and a set of numbers and was told by the agent not to loose it .............is that it, or is there something more I should have.

Mine is the fiat 2008 year !!!!!!!???????

if you've got the card then no probs.

keep it safe......bank deposit box, encase in resin with a house brick...anything, but keep it safe.

I think the system was changed in about 2006 and now all you need is the card with the numbers to get new keys made

prior to that you could activate new keys using the red key BUT elsewhere you were given the card in case you lost the red key ; the UK insurance companies were going to increase the insurance band on these vehicles with the number on the card , so a deal was done whereby the agents didn't issue the cards but a central computer record was kept instead ...which didn't happen in the rest of the EU

so if my theory is correct , if you lose the red key and the card for one of the earlier uk vehicles you should be able to take it to the fiat agent , they can satisfy themselves as to the ownership of the vehicle , then obtain the codes for you

so at a guess the importer no longer keeps a record , so lose those numbers at your peril !you can check with the fiat agent if and when they stopped issuing the key , and maybe prove me wrong [ there has to be a first time :Rofl1: ]

me , I have a french registered vehicle pre 2006 , so have the key AND the card ! but no good me phoning the fiat importer here ...they don't know

i thought that was correct as well...
just been goggling it but cant find anything on the web.

It was earlier than 2006 when they did away with the red key. Mine is a 2005 and has a code card.

I asked a similar question re : 'fiat red key' a couple of weeks ago prior to buying my 2004 reg Hymer which is on a 2.8 JTD Fiat Ducato. The keys (2 off) have an in-built electronic thing which communicates with the vehicles ignition / immobiliser system (simply put !).
The credit card sized card supplied with the key has 2 numbers on it. This is the card which must be guarded with your life. I suppose you could always copy the numbers onto a piece of paper, then you've got a copy of the numbers.
The handbook says that vehicles supplied directly to the uk didn't have the card included, this was something to do with potential car theft etc. Vehicles imported from a European converter, like my Hymer, had this card.
No red key, the card replaces that, and mine's an 04 reg.

regards

Allen

I was told that if you dont have the key code card Fiat can get the codes off their database. Dont know if its true

i know ford can do this so no reason why others cant.

go to a fiat/peugeot dealer for spare parts and they wont/cant seem to do anything without the vehicle reg No so all the details must be on their database.

went to the local peugeot dealer, we dont have a fiat dealer, for a sump bung washer for my ducato (same bung as peugeot and citroen) but was told without a reg No it wasnt possible.

told him not to be bloody stupid and give me a sump bung washer !!!!

he did under protest
