Stick or Hard Drive which is best??
We have Panasonic and LG Tv’s and Panasonic recorders all of which can take a stick or hard drive I believe. We have Avtex TV in the van. Are there format problems? What do you use please?

I tried it using a memory stick from a L G telly but it would not recognize the file ext.

I use a USB powered 3tb hard drive. No issues with a Cello tv with most formats but prefer to stick to .mkv files.

My wife downloads them to her Mac laptop and we watch them on our Avtex tv. All that is needed is an HDMI cable. I think she uses screen mirroring.

We have an LG TV and can record to a flash or hard drive, but that recording will only replay on that TV - and certainly not on our Avtex. I've been told that the recording is encrypted in such a way that it will only replay on that specific TV - it would not even replay on another LG TV of the same model!

Why not record on the Avtex? But of course that would only be Freeview.

When we had have Sky, I used to re-record onto dvd (in real time!) and then I could copy the files directly from the dvd onto a hard drive ready for the Avtex. Time-consuming but it seemed the only way to get recordings from the Sky box onto a hard drive.

I download onto a 32GB memory stick (cruzer fit) the files I know the TV will play are MKV, MP4 & AVI. It's a new LG TV so it might play the advanced codec ones but not tried them yet.

32GB is plenty, a standard definition film is usually about 700MB although they're getting bigger nowadays 🤔

Thanks all for such comprehensive and quick replies. Food for thought. The only one I have an answer to is not recording Freeview/sat on the Avtex is the van only has a sat feed and the Oyster TV only does Free to air stations with the only program guide of now and next! Also thousands of hours of programs on our Panasonic recorders but too big to cart around. Could do it via the skart in real time but will take a lifetime!

I detach the Avtex from the holder in the van (usually done in a few seconds) and bring it indoors and then attach the house ariel to get Freeview with its usual 7 day listing from which you can program recordings.

I'd be interested to know how you do this?
So would I, I did type a question out but it sounded so dumb I deleted it!
Ill stick to dvds and netflix, oh and my magnificent satellite dish ( no the newness hasn’t worn off yet)

Stick a chrome cast or a firestick and cast form your phone tablet or laptop

We put the Avtex in the bin along with the DVD collection & bought an LG which happily accepts a 32Gb memory stick or our 3TB external hard drive which is USB bus powered, so no other power required.
We did use a wee trick though, 12v TVs are not so easy to find, so we bought a 19v one & run it on the computer adapter, runs perfectly & uses hardly any power.
We download movies & they run fine on the TV, but the Avtex didn't like memory sticks, it weighed a tonne & had a DVD player built in, sad thing is DVD players are old hat now & the extra weight compared to memory sticks was a pest.

Same here £170 , ours is bluetooth too. 1.5 amps via the inverter is nothing to worry about 👍

If only! However Avtex Oyster TV drives the dish. I’ll crack it one way or the other, if so I’ll post it here.

In my opinion the avtex tv's although very good are not so good when it comes to playing content from usb, you will have a lot more choice if you attached a small 12v media box between this and the tv. Most android boxes play pretty much all the regular file formats with no re encoding. Load it with something like Kodi and you can then play whatever directly from the usb hard drive attached. A lot of cheap androix boxes on amazon and ebay etc. The media box will also have the ability to stream from the likes of netflix/amazon prime etc etc as well. If you dont need the usb function then an amazon firestick will be the way to go but this still then relies on an internet source.

Our setup is Nvidia Shield Pro (expensive but very good) connected to Avtex tv along with 2tb usb powered harddrive loaded with Films/TV series, never ran out of things to watch since owning a motorhome. If we have a good internet signal then its usually streaming something via the many methods that are available, if not its the usb drive.

I run my 1tb HD through a Samsung TV usb cable. I do have a in inverter primarily for that and the sound bar.
I download MPEG 4 file format from various sources including converted You tube videos and never had a problem

Hi Zac, that’s probably the way I will go thanks. I suppose I’ve just got myself hung up on my damned Panasonic so called “watch anywhere“ recorder. It allowed me to record at home with instructions from my iPhone and Stream back to my iPad etc. Brilliant except just after I bought it they dropped the play anywhere to ‘play anywhere in the home’ grrrrr! So I go away for 90 days without six months of unwatched TV/films. Yes I could cart the pvr with me and set up another recorder to record what I’m missing back home but it would be so good to be able to dump from the Panasonic hard drive to a 2/3TB stick or drive. Thanks again all.

Try downloading from the iPlayer etc. it may use a different file format than your own recordings.

I regularly watch films from usb memory sticks on our Avtex never had a problem. Tv has 2 usb sockets I keep a very small usb stick in No 2 socket for recording directly onto then plug a stick into No 1 socket for movies documentaries etc. I record them onto the sticks via my laptop.
Photo 1 shows the USB screen both usb sticks shown at top.

Photo 3 Starting to play selected file at this stage pressing the play button on the remote restarts it in full screen.

Hope my previous post displays properly I cannot see the full screen images they are taking to long to load. Presently on the CCC Sandringham site and the Wi-fi is very poor and intermittent, 3 signal is non existent so cannot use my mifi.

Successfully recorded the Canadian GP last night on my Avtex. I've an Avtex 249DRSPRO, with a couple of USB memory sticks, and a free-standing Maxview twin LNB sat dish. The principle problem is with the Guide only showing the current and the next programme, but there is a work around.
If you want to record a programme that is not showing on the Guide:
Firstly determine the date, time and station of the programme you wish to record.
Open the Guide and go to the appropriate station.
Select the next (not the current) programme.
Press the REC button.
A new window should pop-up which will show the timings of the programme you've just selected for recording.
At the bottom of this window will be 'Auto Mode'.
Press the down arrow once and it will highlight the 'Auto Mode'.
Press the right arrow, and it will change to 'Once', or something similar.
You can now change the times (and dates, if necessary*) to those of the programme you wish to record.
Once changed, press the OK button.
It will now show the timings of the programme you selected. However, the programme title will remain that of the original programme; this is not an issue, as the programme file will be saved as a date (ie 20220620****) on the memory stick.

* the Canadian GP on Channel 4 started at 2300hrs on the 19th June and ended at about 0200hrs on the 20th. Therefore, I had to change the Stop date.

I suppose there are easier systems and methods, but for what I want it does the trick  .

Have you plugged it into the right USB port our avtex has 2.
One for recording from the antenna.
The other is for playback.
You might need to format the drive on the tv first, we had to on ours
