Hi All.
I've been looking at a Rapido 997M, a large MH, the vehicle in question has the Mercedes 2.2 litre engine, I know that the 2.7 is a good engine but I can't find any info on the 2.2. Has anyone had any experience with this engine? Thanks.

Years don't make wisdom, they just make old age.

I have a year 2000 b680 starline with the 2.7 engine . It pulls 4.2 tons of van along with no problems .
I am thinking of selling it as soon as enough lockdown finishes so i can get it an mot.
Sorry cant comment on the 2.2 engine.

The only advantage of the small engine is that it is lighter. We have a 999m with the 3L engine and its very easy to overload the front axle. Drives very well though and can cruise at 90mph on the clock if required though fuel consumption suffers badly so I don't do it except in dire need on toll roads that allow it.

It might help if you put a year down as engines have generally got smaller but relatively more powerful.

We looked hard at a 997M 10 years ago, at a guess it was about 3 years old then, nice piece of kit, it had the 3 litre 184hp engine which I felt was about right for it, the smaller engine then was about 130hp which is probably not enough as they are fairly heavy.

If this is the post 2006 engine I know ambulancekidd used them for work and said that they were fine for that. I was considering buying a Hymer with one but in the end went for an older model with the 2.7L

We had the 2.2 engine with the 2148cc engine in our Sprinter (906 model) campervan & apart from an EGR fault (very easily fixed) it never missed a beat in four years on constant use, It was our only transport at the time.
35mpg was very easy to achieve, the engine pulled willingly & was quite sprightly even whilst overtaking.

I have no experience of the slightly later 2143cc engine, but I've been told that its a very similar engine & the changes to the size were emissions led.

Further to my post.. The MH has the 2007 2.2 engine fitted.

I think thats the one they called 313, It depends on use but wouldnt be enough for me in a 4200kgs?? A class. reducing engine sizes is Ok but brings greater stresses and different torque characteristics

Edit to say I think the 2.7 was the 5 Cylinder from the previous generation, I'm no expert though.

  • 82hp, 109hp and 129hp 2.2-litre four-cylinder common rail turbodiesels - according to Parkers. These were produced up to 2006 but I guess as motorhome it wasn't registered until 2007. The 2.1L was produced after this.To be honest I think all those sizes of engine would struggle with a large motorhome and the GVW might be an issue also. Rapido tend to be quite well built and therefore heavy so not much payload.
