On 4th van so not a total newbie....
Just looking to install this, but reading the instructions, it states 2 things :
"the selected location must have a conductive metallic surface area which is a minimum of 400x400mm to achieve optimal performance". Is this really necessary?
"in order to avoid communication interference ensure that the antenna is placed at least 0.5m away from other antennas and metal objects" where I am looking to place it will be about 4inches from the metal awning cover, so presumably this will cause a problem?

The first requirement is about providing a ground plane. The Pointing antenna I fitted had this built in. What model have you got?

It will still work close to the awning but not as well as it would if in the open. Will you notice? Probably not. :)

Regarding nearby antenna there is a calculation based on wave structure so that the wave peaks are at different points. DBK will probably be more able to advise with his Ham knowledge. I remember I needed to place my LTE antenna more than 12 inches from the WiFi antenna that I had on the roof.

A disc of 1mm stainless will work as a metallic surface. A half wavelength in diameter (if I knew the wavelength l'd state it in mm - someone will know😊) .

As John says fairly certain that model has a built in ground plane, if you contact Poynting they are very quick at responding.
As for position on the roof just put it in the clearest space you can not much else you can do apart from fabricating a bracket so it sits higher clear of the awning.
Test it in postion before you finally fit it, I'm sure it will work fine.

Currently testing in different positions on the roof.

If your roof is fibreglass and the antenna needs a ground plane this will have a bigger impact than placing it near an object. A square of aluminium stuck down on the roof will do the job. If you can't have one as big as required then just make it as large as you can.

For a more definitive answer send an email to Pointing, they are very responsive to questions.

Just an update, all fitted, drilling through the roof was nerv wracking but straight forward.
I am using a teltonika 955, which has taken a fair bit of setting up but now working, set up to use WiFi if possible with fallover to mobile, also has dual sim, which I won't use, just waiting for sim to turn up in the post, but tested with sim from phone.

If you do need a ground plane, simply use a couple of layers of aluminium tape, counter layered and then sealed over with spray paint to match the roof. Leave the section directly below the antennae bare to get good conductivity. You can use the same tape to make an effective rf barrier to interference too
