According to news on the BBC

Summary

  1. Portugal is set to be moved from England's green travel list to amber - meaning that people can only travel there for essential reasons, the BBC understands
  2. No new countries will be added to England's green list for foreign travel, the BBC understands
  3. It is expected more countries will be added to the red list, which should only be visited in extreme circumstances
  4. "I understand why people want to travel, of course I do, but we’ve got to make sure we keep this country safe," Matt Hancock says
  5. Making sure coronavirus vaccines are available "at cost" to poorer nations is a priority, the UK health secretary also says
  6. 17,162 people tested positive for Covid-19 in England in the week to 26 May, up 22% on the previous week and the highest for six weeks
  7. More than 20 healthcare organisations call for stricter UK guidelines on face masks and other personal personal protective equipment
  8. The education recovery commissioner for England resigns in a row over the lack of "credible" Covid catch-up funding

Stand by for much crying, wailing and protesting from;

Potugal.
Tourists stuck out there.
People waiting to go there.
Et al.

Tough shit is my feeling, even if it wasn't on the cards.

We are still in a global pandemic, we have to contain it.

Never a day goes by, as one used to be able to comment in olden days ...

With respect Mr Old Man...

I am in Portugal and I am NOT...

Crying or wailing or protesting...

What are you like?

But we have been vaccinated fully so if we can't get on with normal life what's the point?

But, I guess they are not taking vaccinations into account. You could still come back infected and spread infection even with no symptoms. We would love to travel Europe this year but no way with all the restrictions and uncertainty.

There are many families desperate to see each other who will be crying and wailing, and I sympathise with them. I also sympathise with those who rely on tourism for their livelihood and here at least have been depending on food parcels for months. Its not just about people wanting to go on a holiday jsunt, this affects so many in so many ways.

Surely the government realises that having such a small green list, condenses the amount of people going there?
The numbers in Portugal were always bound to increase, no great surprise in that.
I wonder why they didn't act like this with people from India?

no we havent that's the point
unless you mean the "selfish" we.

You can still pass it round if there are people with it in and around you. Even simple things like touch transmission.

I don’t get the families not being able to see each other. They had no problem leaving in the first place so can not of been that bothered then

No I mean those of us who were Guinea pigs for the vaccine and took a chance to get vaccinated hoping what Boris said would be true in that it was the way out of this situation obviously just another load of BS to save his skin. Medical advice from JVT is that its perfectly safe for fully vaccinated people to mix with no adverse effects in general so lets get on with it (or at least the selfish we) ::bigsmile:

I suspect they had planned to visit 3 or 4 times a year (maybe more) but its now 18 months which is a long time for not seeing kids as they grow and change so much.

That’s the way the cookie crumbles. If seeing each other was so important then they would not have moved, simples.

Some may not had the choice but I am not bothered as it does not affect me but some will be?

its been nearly 18 months now but patience can wear thin
Most of the patience at our GP surgery are most certainly not thin, nor are they a virtue. But they do provide a source of income for the Doctors and Practice Nurses ... :dance2:

So, because you have not the money for 2-3 trips, no one should, i see.
I did not say that, but maybe people with money might have a more entitled view. In the grand scheme of things not seeing each other is nothing major.

We also holiday abroad but wont let it bother me until it is safe to do so. You live in a fantastic county with some real gems on your doorstep, the weather is gorgeous sorry don't understand your stress.

Its all going to go out the window. There are not systems in place to check all those travelling back from yellow listed countries to see if they are tucked up indoors for 10 days. So all those who have decided to spend half term in Spain due back this weekend, who is going gtpo check on them. Now add all those from today or whenever the Government say that coming back from Portugal will need to stay indoors. What will that total be. 200,000 people maybe. Come on this is all going to fall flat on its face.

I fear you may be right. Whether the UK can avoid a 3rd wave is now in the lap of the gods of vaccination. This half term break is certain to produce a spike in Covid infections, the only question is how big.
